Malaysian media collectively reacted after AFC penalized the Malaysian national team in the match against Vietnam in June 2025 due to naturalization fraud.
The Asian Football Confederation issued a disciplinary ruling against the Football Association of Malaysia for using ineligible players in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. According to the decision dated March 17, 2026, Malaysia was penalized with a 0-3 loss in two matches they had won against the Nepal national team (2-0, March 25, 2025) and the Vietnam national team (4-0, June 10, 2025), and was fined USD 50,000.
Consequently, Group F changed significantly: the Vietnam national team rose to the top with 15 points after 5 consecutive wins, almost securing a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup finals. Malaysia dropped to second place with 9 points, while Nepal and Laos each have 3 points.

The Malaysian national team was penalized with losses in two matches against the Nepal and Vietnam national teams in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
FAM stated it will request AFC to provide detailed explanations before considering the possibility of appeal or further legal steps. The upcoming return match between Vietnam and Malaysia thus only holds procedural significance.
