Vietnam's 3-0 victory over Malaysia brings even more positive news from FIFA.

Vietnam's national team will gain significant points and rise strongly in the FIFA rankings after Malaysia was penalized by AFC for citizenship fraud.

The Vietnamese national team now has a substantial opportunity to improve its FIFA ranking position following the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)'s sanction against Malaysia for violating citizenship regulations. This development is crucial, directly impacting the standings in Group F and the future of Vietnam's team in continental competitions.

Specifically, AFC awarded 3-0 default losses to Malaysia for their 2025 matches against Nepal and Vietnam due to using ineligible players, under Article 25.1. This decision not only alters match results but also triggers major changes in points and rankings. Consequently, Vietnam's team will regain lost points and stands poised for a significant leap on the FIFA rankings.

Calculations indicate Vietnam's team will recover approximately 13.99 previously lost points and gain an additional 10.5–11 points from the awarded wins. Overall, Coach Kim Sang Sik's squad could increase by 24-25 points, raising their total to around 1,214 and advancing to 103rd in the world. This is a crucial step forward, laying groundwork for longer-term goals.

Furthermore, in March 2026, Vietnam's national team has two matches against Bangladesh (a friendly) and Malaysia (Asian Cup qualifier). If favorable results are achieved, the team could accumulate an additional 11-13 points, thereby moving closer to the FIFA top 100. This milestone is significant for improving standing and seeding groups in upcoming tournaments.

Conversely, the penalty causes heavy losses for Malaysia. The team loses points, dropping from the leading position to 9 points, goal difference reduced to +2, and loses its top spot in Group F. Meanwhile, Vietnam's team is awarded a 3-0 win, raising its total points to 15, goal difference to +13, and taking the lead with a perfect record after 5 matches.

Other teams are also affected by this decision. Nepal is awarded a win over Malaysia, gaining 3 points and ranking third, while Laos retains 3 points but ranks lower due to a poorer goal difference. The group standings are thus completely transformed by this single AFC decision.

With a 6-point gap over the rest and only one match remaining, Vietnam's national team has officially secured qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup and will certainly top Group F ahead of the clash with Malaysia on March 31, 2026. This is not only an achievement in results but also opens a major opportunity for the team to continue advancing on the FIFA rankings in the near future.
