Opinion: Slot's position is increasingly shaky

Tonight's match not only determines the outcome of the entire season but also shapes the future of a manager. For Liverpool and Arne Slot, the rematch against Galatasaray could create the biggest turning point of the season.

1. For over a decade, Liverpool has always been seen as a team that delivers strong emotions to its fans. However, this season is unfolding in a completely opposite direction. Instead of faith and excitement, many supporters are beginning to feel weary watching their team.

Under Arne Slot, Liverpool hasn't been entirely poor in overall results, but their style of play is causing fans to question. Statistics show that in the last 50 matches, Slot's win rate has dropped to only 52%, a sharp decline from 72% in the first 50 matches. More concerning, the number of defeats has increased from 7 to 16, a sign that the team is becoming increasingly vulnerable.

Recent matches clearly reflect this issue. Liverpool often starts sluggishly, rarely scores early, and appears stagnant against disciplined defensive systems. Even when facing opponents willing to play openly like Galatasaray, Slot's team still seems lacking in sharpness in creating opportunities.

Many fans are beginning to feel that Liverpool is losing the identity that once built their brand. Under Jurgen Klopp, this team could win or lose, but always displayed intensity, determination, and a clear philosophy. Currently, however, many believe Liverpool exists in a state of tactical ambiguity.

2. While the dissatisfaction among fans is increasingly evident, Liverpool's leadership appears much calmer. According to reputable journalist David Ornstein, the club's ownership group Fenway Sports Group remains "fully supportive" of Slot.

The message from the top is quite clear: dismissing Slot is not in the plan. The Dutch manager still has a contract until June 2027 and has only completed about two-thirds of his three-year deal. In the eyes of the leadership, he remains the suitable manager model for the philosophy Liverpool pursues.

Slot's future could be decided if Liverpool is eliminated by Galatasaray

This approach is actually not new. Liverpool under Fenway Sports Group rarely makes rash decisions. When appointing Jurgen Klopp in 2015, they also accepted a transitional period before true success arrived.

The problem is the current context is different. Klopp quickly established a clear imprint on the playing style then, even though results were unstable. Conversely, many are still waiting for a clear tactical imprint from Slot.

Liverpool still has important objectives ahead: the Top 4 race in the Premier League, the chance to overturn the situation against Galatasaray in the Champions League, and the FA Cup quarter-final against Man City. Positive results could quickly change the atmosphere at Anfield.

But if things continue to go off track, even the patience of the leadership will inevitably face major challenges.

3. In top-level football, a manager's position is rarely decided by just one match. However, one defeat can sometimes completely alter the landscape.

If Liverpool collapses again against Galatasaray, it not only means they are eliminated from the Champions League. More importantly, it will reinforce the feeling that the team is entering a cycle of bland and directionless performances.

The pressure from the Anfield stands is inherently very special. When fans believe, they can become a tremendous energy source for the team. But when trust declines, that atmosphere can quickly turn into skepticism.

Arne Slot may still receive support from the leadership, but a manager cannot survive long-term if the gap between him and the fans grows wider. Football history has proven that fan trust is a factor with weight equal to any contract.

Another defeat might not be enough to trigger an immediate managerial change scenario for Liverpool. However, it will make the question about Slot's future larger than ever.

And when those questions begin to echo increasingly, the manager's seat, though still secure on paper, will inevitably feel intensely shaky.
