The organizer of Malaysia's professional football leagues (MFL) issued a warning after fans gathered to protest outside FAM headquarters over the naturalization controversy.
As previously reported, yesterday morning, March 17, the area outside the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) headquarters became tense when a group of Selangor fans gathered for a "civilized protest" to oppose the management's handling and demand transparency regarding the naturalized player issue. Fans brought banners, directly expressing their dissatisfaction with the leadership.
According to reports from Astro Arena reporter Fina Nasrom, the gathering proceeded orderly, without any extreme or destructive behavior. However, the message from the fans was clear, as they believed FAM's handling was inadequate and required more transparent answers. This development prompted the organizer of Malaysia's professional football leagues (MFL) to make an official statement.
According to Makanbola, MFL issued a statement reprimanding the protest by Selangor FC fans at Wisma FAM. The authority confirmed they noted the incident and emphasized that publicly gathering to protest could cause negative impacts on domestic football's image if not properly controlled.
In the statement, MFL clearly stated: "MFL respects the rights of all parties to express their views. Simultaneously, any action that may affect public order and the reputation of domestic football is inappropriate." This shows the league organizer still respects the right to express opinions, but disagrees with the form of expression.
Additionally, MFL affirmed its role as the professional league management body, emphasizing all decisions are based on multiple factors such as competition regulations and stakeholders' interests. Simultaneously, the authority called on parties to use official channels to submit feedback and suggestions, to ensure harmony and the national football image is maintained, rather than organizing protests to exert pressure.
One of the main reasons leading to the wave of fan reactions is the issue related to naturalized players. MFL clarified that the process for naturalized players and local-born players is completely different, and verification and registration follow regulations in the Liga Malaysia Handbook 2025-2026.
In that context, the incident involving the group of naturalized players reached its conclusion when AFC officially penalized Malaysia's national team with a 0-3 loss in two matches against Vietnam and Bangladesh. This decision not only directly affected the qualification scenario but also severely impacted fans' trust, forcing Malaysian football to face significant pressure regarding transparency and reputation.
