Following the devastating 7-2 win over Newcastle, coach Hansi Flick warned his players to remain humble and focus fully on each upcoming step in the Champions League.
Barcelona just created an earthquake at Camp Nou when they crushed Newcastle United with an unbelievable score of 7-2, thereby securing their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 8-3. Amid the festive atmosphere and endless praise from fans, coach Hansi Flick appeared with an unusually calm attitude. The German strategist understands that in top-level football, arrogance is the biggest enemy.
Despite the big win, Hansi Flick did not hide his dissatisfaction with his players' start. He frankly admitted that the team had moments of losing control: “It was a crazy match. I think we weren’t sharp in the first half. I told them that in the first half we lost possession many times.”
Only when entering the break did Flick's tactical adjustments take effect. He demanded the players to be more disciplined, control the ball securely, and defend deep to preserve the result.
“In the second half, we played better, controlled the ball better. What I liked most was that I showed the players how to play during the halftime break and they followed it. It was great to see that,” Flick shared with satisfaction about the discipline of the young squad.
When asked about the possibility of claiming the throne after this destructive performance, Flick immediately poured cold water on illusions: “We cannot think about winning the Champions League right now. We must progress step by step, match by match… Both Atletico and Tottenham are truly excellent teams and we will have to fight to the fullest.”
For Flick, the daily progress of the young players is the most important thing. He praised the collective effort and professionalism of names like Robert Lewandowski - who proved the value of experience with a classy brace.
“Lewandowski is very experienced and in matches like this, he is one of the best forwards. I am very happy that he scored two goals,” he emphasized.
Alongside the joy of victory, Hansi Flick also faces concerns about personnel as Joan Garcia and Eric Garcia both suffered injuries. While hoping the situation is not too serious, he remained cautious: “It seems not too serious, but we don’t know the situation. We must wait until tomorrow.”
At the end of the interview, Flick decided to reward his players with a day off to recover physically. This is how he helps the whole team relieve pressure after a tense match, while preparing mentally for tougher challenges in the quarter-finals. For Hansi Flick, the Champions League is a marathon, and Barcelona has only completed a beautiful stage.
