Champions League quarter-final predictions: Arsenal advances; Real Madrid and Bayern Munich may face penalty shootouts

The Champions League has entered its decisive phase, with the eight teams advancing to the quarter-finals officially confirmed.

This is an exceptionally high-stakes quarter-final round, featuring four of the five most historically successful clubs in the competition, alongside reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Real Madrid (15), Liverpool (6), Bayern Munich (6), and Barcelona (5) have collectively won 32 of the 70 C1/Champions League titles since Real Madrid claimed the first trophy in 1956. But this year, which club will engrave its name on the cup?

Paris Saint-Germain vs Liverpool

This is a rematch of last season's thrilling Round of 16 encounter – a rare duel where both teams secured away victories. Liverpool was thoroughly dominated by Paris Saint-Germain in Paris, but thanks to an outstanding performance by Alisson Becker and a late goal from Harvey Elliott, they still managed a 1-0 win.

However, in the return leg at Anfield, Gianluigi Donnarumma became the hero, while Ousmane Dembele scored very early, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. The Italian goalkeeper then saved two penalties to help PSG advance.

Both clubs easily secured domestic league titles in the 2024-25 season, but this current campaign tells a completely different story. Liverpool is struggling significantly with form and consistency, currently sitting 5th, while PSG leads Ligue 1 but is closely pursued by Lens with just a one-point gap.

So what can be expected from this matchup? For Liverpool, it's hard to predict. They recently displayed speed and high-energy performance in a 4-0 win over Galatasaray in the Round of 16 return leg. But against stronger opponents, they often lack pace, creativity, and are particularly vulnerable defensively.

PSG may not yet be at the level of last season's championship-winning form, but their dominant 8-2 aggregate victory over Chelsea shows they are peaking at the right moment. The quartet of Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Bradley Barcola, and Desire Doue is forming one of the most formidable attacking lines in the world.

Prediction: Given the current situation, Liverpool is too unstable to overcome PSG over two legs.

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich

This is the quintessential "European super classic," the most frequent matchup in Champions League history and a quarter-final clash eagerly anticipated by fans.

Two of Europe's biggest clubs have surprisingly never met in a final, but since 2000 alone, this marks their 11th Champions League knockout-stage encounter (6 semi-finals, 3 quarter-finals, and 2 Round of 16 ties).

The rivalry between these teams began in the 1970s and reached its peak tension in 1987, when Real Madrid midfielder Juanito stamped on Lothar Matthaus's head and was banned from European competition for five years.

Since then, violent incidents have diminished, but drama has never been absent. Their most recent clash in 2024 is a prime example. After a 2-2 draw in Germany in the first leg, Bayern Munich led 1-0 and seemed certain to reach the final with just two minutes remaining, thanks to a goal by Alphonso Davies.

But then Joselu, a striker loaned to Real Madrid from Espanyol, scored two goals in two minutes to orchestrate an unbelievable comeback.

Bayern under Vincent Kompany is in extremely impressive form: they are far ahead in the Bundesliga, finished second in their group stage, and recently crushed Atalanta with a 10-2 aggregate score. The trio of Harry Kane, Luis Diaz, and Michael Olise will certainly be rated slightly higher.

But with Real Madrid, there's always a "but." This might not be their strongest squad historically, but with Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid can never be easily dismissed from the competition.

Prediction: The feeling suggests Bayern has the advantage, but remembering it's Real Madrid in the Champions League, everything becomes highly unpredictable. A penalty shootout might be required.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid

This match certainly won't end 0-0. Barcelona, a team that always plays with fiery attacking intensity, has scored 124 goals across all competitions this season, averaging 2.7 goals per match, and recently defeated Newcastle 7-2 in the return leg to win 8-3 on aggregate.

Lamine Yamal is currently one of the best players in the world. Alongside him are Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and supporting players including Marcus Rashford, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Fermin Lopez, complemented by "maestros" like Pedri and Gavi – Barcelona truly is a dream team for neutral fans.

However, something similar happened last season, when Barca played with fiery attack but had a fragile defense, ultimately paying the price by losing to Inter Milan 6-7 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

In the past, people rarely described Diego Simeone's Atletico as an entertaining team, but now it's different. Especially whenever they face Barcelona, matches tend to be high-scoring; the two teams combined for 18 goals across 4 matches last season.

Atletico beat Tottenham 7-5 over two legs in the Round of 16, but that wasn't a truly convincing performance. To trouble Barcelona, they will need to elevate their game another level.

Prediction: Defensive weaknesses might hinder Barcelona's championship aspirations, but they still have enough strength to overcome Atletico.

Sporting CP vs Arsenal

These are two clubs both seeking their first Champions League title in history, but clearly among the remaining eight teams, this is the most favorable opponent Arsenal could face.

Sporting CP possesses a good attacking line, with Primeira Liga top scorer Luis Suarez (Colombia), and two skillful attacking players Pedro Goncalves and Francisco Trincao. However, young talent Geovany Quenda is injured, and captain Morten Hjulmand is suspended for the first leg.

Sporting is entering uncharted territory, as this is their first time reaching the Champions League quarter-finals under the current format (their last appearance in the C1 top 8 was in the 1982-83 season). They recently experienced one of the most memorable European nights in the club's history.

A 5-0 home win over Bodo/Glimt might not seem overly impressive months ago, but reversing a 0-3 deficit against a team that defeated Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Manchester City in 2026 is truly remarkable.

Arsenal fans certainly haven't forgotten the penalty shootout defeat to Sporting in the Europa League Round of 16 three years ago, despite winning 5-1 in Lisbon during the group stage last season.

However, Arsenal fully deserves to be considered one of the top contenders for the Champions League title this season. Their ability to secure results in difficult matches keeps them in contention for four trophies before entering the League Cup final this weekend.

Prediction: If they don't lose in the first leg in Lisbon, it's very difficult for Arsenal not to advance.
