The only Southeast Asian team to secure a World Cup qualification

Not Vietnam or Thailand, Philippines is the only Southeast Asian team to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The Philippines women's team secured a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the playoff, officially earning their spot in the 2027 Women's World Cup. Previously, they suffered a heavy 7-0 defeat to Japan in the quarter-finals. However, the opportunity remained, and the Southeast Asian representative seized it effectively in the playoff round.

Two goals in the second half by Angela Beard and Jaclyn Sawicki helped Philippines achieve a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan in the match for qualification to the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027. This victory enabled Philippines to secure their second consecutive World Cup qualification, while Uzbekistan still hopes for their first international appearance through the inter-confederation playoff in 2026.

In the group stage, Philippines finished third in Group A with 3 points and a goal difference of -2. Philippines ranked above Vietnam in the standings of the best third-placed teams and earned a playoff spot to advance to the quarter-finals. Thus, Philippines is also the only Southeast Asian football representative to qualify for the World Cup.

The Vietnam women's team naturally regrets that this year's opportunity to participate in the World Cup was wide open due to the increased number of participating teams. Simply advancing past the group stage would have given Coach Mai Duc Chung's squad three chances to qualify: direct qualification if winning in the quarter-finals, losing in the quarter-finals then playing the playoff, or losing the playoff and competing in the inter-confederation round.

If the Vietnam women's team could not advance past the Asian Cup group stage, Thailand even failed to reach the finals. Thus, Philippines will continue to be the leading flag of Southeast Asia on the global stage, as this marks their second consecutive qualification for the World Cup finals.
