Malaysia's National Team CEO Makes Unexpected Statement Following AFC Penalty Before Match Against Vietnam

Malaysia national team CEO Rob Friend acknowledged the point-deducting penalty from AFC and is reviewing it through legal channels, while still focusing on preparing to face Vietnam.

The CEO of Malaysia's national team, Rob Friend, officially spoke after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) issued a point-deducting penalty against the country's football. Notably, he stated the decision is still being reviewed through legal channels, as Malaysia faces multiple disadvantages ahead of the rematch with the Vietnam national team.

According to Malaysian media, the AFC penalty stemmed from the national team using some naturalized players who did not meet eligibility requirements. Consequently, Malaysia was ruled to have lost some matches, including encounters with Vietnam and Nepal, and was deducted a total of 6 points, nearly ending their chance to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup.

Regarding this situation, CEO Rob Friend stated: "We acknowledge the decision of the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee regarding the point deduction. We respect the competition process. Meanwhile, this matter is being reviewed through appropriate legal channels."

Furthermore, he emphasized the team's direction during this sensitive period: "Throughout this time, our priority remains supporting the players and staff, ensuring they have the best conditions to represent the Malaysia national team professionally, unitedly, and proudly. Currently, we are fully focused on preparing for the upcoming match against the Vietnam national team. The Malaysia team will compete with confidence, resilience, and discipline as demonstrated throughout 2025. We thank the fans for their continuous support and belief in the team."

Meanwhile, Malaysia's squad preparation is still being finalized. Head coach Cklamovski has not announced the official roster, but is likely to call up some new naturalized players such as Bergson da Silva or Giancarlo Gallifuoco. Additionally, defender Dion Cools will also join after completing duties with his club in Japan.

Despite suffering significant point and morale losses, Malaysia asserts they will not give up. The rematch with the Vietnam national team on March 31 is seen as an opportunity for this team to prove their character, while sending a strong message that they are still ready to fight to the end, despite the turbulence from the AFC penalty.
