Defender Syahmi Safari expressed his delight at being summoned back to the Malaysian national team, as they gear up for the encounter with Vietnam in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying round on March 31.
The player from Johor Darul Ta'zim marks his return to the national team after more than two years of absence, primarily due to a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered in the 2024 season. After a long period of treatment and recovery, Syahmi returned to play last November and quickly regained his form, thereby convincing the coaching staff to grant him the opportunity.
Sharing before departing with the team to Bangkok for training, the 28-year-old defender emotionally stated: “I am extremely grateful and feel fortunate to be back in the national team after over two years. This is the best timing and opportunity for me.” He also affirmed his determination to repay the trust of Coach Peter Cklamovski if given the chance to play.
The last time Syahmi wore the Malaysian national team jersey was during the AFC Asian Cup 2023 campaign under coach Kim Pan Gon. His return this time holds significant importance as Malaysia needs to strengthen its squad ahead of the crucial match against Vietnam.
Notably, Syahmi is one of two new faces called up, along with teammate Feroz Baharudin. Both are expected to bring a fresh impetus to the Harimau Malaya defense.
Despite previously facing difficulties due to being penalized for using ineligible players in earlier matches, Malaysia remains highly determined in the rematch against Vietnam. For Syahmi Safari personally, this is not only a chance to return but also a journey to prove himself after a long battle with injury.
