By cleverly inserting a buy-back clause, Liverpool plans to save 15 million euros to bring Jarell Quansah back to Anfield, as Virgil van Dijk considers retirement.
European football transfer market is witnessing a calculated move from Liverpool's leadership regarding the future of young center-back Jarell Quansah.
After selling this 23-year-old talent to Bayer Leverkusen last summer for around 35 million euros (approximately 47 million USD), the Merseyside club never intended to lose him permanently. Instead, they installed a flexible buy-back clause, granting the club priority rights to bring Quansah home at varying prices depending on the timing.
Currently, Quansah's buy-back clause stands at 80 million euros and becomes effective immediately after the 2025/26 season concludes. However, according to reports from Germany, the likelihood of Liverpool paying this enormous sum right away is low.
Instead, The Reds are executing a more patient strategy: waiting another year. The reason is that, according to the signed agreement, the buy-back fee will automatically drop to 65 million euros in the summer of 2027. This move allows Liverpool to save up to 15 million euros, a significant amount in the context of needing to reinvest in multiple other positions.
The period around 2027 is also seen as the ideal timing for Quansah's return. This is when Virgil van Dijk - the current defensive leader who is now 34 years old - officially ends his contract with the Anfield club. Liverpool's leadership skillfully arranged the Leverkusen deal as a period for Quansah to "study abroad" and accumulate top-level experience.
After two years of honing his skills in the Bundesliga, the English center-back is expected to be mature enough to take over the captain's armband and the immense legacy left by Van Dijk, helping Liverpool's defense maintain stability without needing to expend excessive effort searching for new talent in the market.
Regarding Quansah, he is having a breakout season in Germany, becoming an irreplaceable element in Bayer Leverkusen's lineup with 38 appearances and contributing up to 4 goals. Although he recently suffered a minor injury causing him to miss England's national team camp against Uruguay and Japan, the standing of this 23-year-old player remains very solid.
Quansah is currently a strong candidate for a spot in the 2026 World Cup in North America. The valuable experiences on the international stage and in the German football environment will undoubtedly transform him into a more perfect version when his return to Anfield in the summer of 2027 officially arrives.
