Arsenal star faces demands from home fans to leave the pitch

Defender Ben White experienced a controversial return at Wembley, as his standout performance was insufficient to silence the boos from his own supporters.

The friendly match between England and Uruguay on the morning of March 28 marked Ben White's first appearance for the "Three Lions" after nearly four years of absence. Substituted for Fikayo Tomori in the 69th minute, the Arsenal defender immediately became the focal point of attention. In the 81st minute, from a corner kick by Cole Palmer, White arrived perfectly at the far post to tap the ball close-range, opening the scoring for the England national team.

However, the joy was fleeting. In the 90+3rd minute, during a defensive situation intervened by VAR, the referee determined White had committed a high-foot foul on Federico Vinas inside the penalty area. From the penalty spot, Federico Valverde did not miss the chance to equalize 1-1 for Uruguay in the 95th minute. From nearly being the hero who secured victory for his team, White inadvertently became the center of a regrettable draw.

The most notable aspect of this match was not the professional developments, but the negative reaction from English spectators. Boos echoed incessantly from the moment Ben White's name was announced upon his substitution. Even when he scored his first goal for the national team, the hostility did not diminish.

The root of this anger stems from White's voluntary departure from the national team during the 2022 World Cup and his subsequent refusal to join the squad under Gareth Southgate due to a conflict with assistant Steve Holland. English fans are not quick to forgive actions perceived as "betraying the nation."

Manager Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment: “His decisive goal was indeed too good to be true. This is truly disappointing because I don’t think it benefits anyone.”

Besides Ben White's story, the match was overshadowed by Thomas Tuchel's anger directed at the fellow German refereeing team. The German strategist was extremely displeased with Uruguay's overly aggressive play, which forced key players Phil Foden and Noni Madueke to leave early due to injury.

Tuchel described Ronald Araújo's tackle on Foden as "a leg-breaking challenge" and could not understand why VAR reviewed White's foul but overlooked that brutal incident.

“We will always defend Ben. He played excellently and deserved a second chance. Hopefully everyone can move forward and accept that,” Tuchel emphasized in his effort to protect his player from the wave of criticism.

Although the 1-1 draw provided many professional lessons, the rift between Ben White and English fans remains the most difficult issue Tuchel must address ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
