Naturalized striker surpasses even Xuan Son but lacks opportunity in the Vietnam national team

Despite holding an unprecedented scoring record in V-League and having Vietnamese citizenship, this striker remains outside the national team's door, sparking much debate and regret.

On March 26th evening, Vietnamese fans eagerly witnessed Do Hoang Hen's debut in the national team jersey. The positive momentum from the wave of naturalized players like Nguyen Xuan Son further heightened expectations. Amid this excitement, another name was frequently mentioned as a symbol of unfinished potential: Hoang Vu Samson.

Born in 1988, originally named Samson Kayode Olaleye, the striker has been involved with Vietnamese football for nearly 20 years and is currently the most outstanding foreign-origin striker in domestic football history, holding the record of over 220 goals in V-League. He was once a terror to every defense, yet never received a chance with the national team. Samson's story thus becomes a unique slice illustrating the paradoxes in Vietnamese football.

Samson arrived in Vietnam at age 20 and quickly made a strong impression. In his first season in the First Division in 2008, he scored 15 goals in 22 matches for Than Quang Ninh. A year later, wearing Dong Thap's jersey, he and Timothy formed an explosive attacking duo with 24 goals, with Samson contributing 13.

Three seasons at Dong Thap saw the Nigerian-origin striker score 43 goals in 49 matches, an astonishing efficiency. That form not only made him an icon at Cao Lanh Stadium but also caught the eye of Atletico Madrid. The Spanish club planned to sign him and loan him to Braga, but the deal collapsed due to a contractual barrier worth $2 million.

Unable to move to Europe, Samson joined Hanoi T&T and entered the most brilliant phase of his career. Here, he received good treatment, became the focal point of the playstyle, and was supported to obtain Vietnamese citizenship in 2013, officially named Hoang Vu Samson.

From that point, the dream of wearing the Vietnam national team jersey became legally possible and closer than ever. Samson maintained stable scoring form, often reaching 15–20 goals per season. However, the paradox lies in: when he was at his peak, the national team did not grant him an opportunity, even though the attack often lacked a true center forward.

As Vietnamese football gradually became more open to naturalized players and built a stable system, Samson was no longer in his prime. Time became the biggest barrier, making his waiting journey stretch into hopelessness.

At 38, Samson still perseveres, playing for PVF-PPS. The chance for a national team call-up is slim, but fans still hope for a complete ending – whether it's one chance to wear the national jersey or a special opportunity at a tournament like ASIAD 2026.
