Vietnam's football team was penalized with a 0-3 loss due to using an ineligible player.

Truong Giang Gia Dinh Club was handed a strict punishment by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) after a critical staffing mistake in the inaugural game of the 2026 National Second Division League, Southern zone.

A Vietnamese second division club was given a 0-3 forfeit loss, similar to AFC's penalty against Malaysia.

Specifically, in the match held on March 24 at Tan Hiep Stadium (Hoc Mon), this team drew 0-0 with Tay Ninh. However, the result was later annulled when VFF determined that Truong Giang Gia Dinh Club had used a player who did not meet eligibility requirements. According to decision No. 300/QĐ-LĐBĐVN issued on March 28, the team was penalized with a 0-3 loss and fined 15 million VND.

The violation stemmed from the club registering and using midfielder Tran Ky Anh (born 2004, jersey number 8) in the starting lineup. This player was previously among a group of five players from Ba Ria - Vung Tau Club (now Ho Chi Minh City Club) disciplined under VFF's decision No. 91 dated February 27, 2024. He was suspended indefinitely for involvement in misconduct during the match between Ba Ria - Vung Tau and SHB Da Nang in the 2023/24 National First Division League.

Since the suspension remains effective, Tran Ky Anh is not eligible to participate in any competition under the VFF system. Failure to thoroughly review disciplinary records led Truong Giang Gia Dinh Club to commit a serious error and pay the price in their opening match.

The consequence is that the team not only lost the point they had just earned but was also recorded with a 0-3 defeat, dropping to the bottom of Group B with 0 points and a -3 goal difference. Meanwhile, Tay Ninh was awarded a win and gained 3 points, tying with Lam Dong before entering round 2.

The incident occurred just as the entire team was traveling to Vinh Long to prepare for the next fixture, creating significant psychological pressure on the coaching staff and players. This unfortunate stumble, not stemming from professional aspects, directly impacted the team's competitive goals for the season.

The case of Truong Giang Gia Dinh Club once again serves as a warning bell regarding professionalism in personnel management within domestic football leagues. Even a minor administrative oversight can lead to major consequences, affecting the fairness and reputation of the competition.
