The Ligue 1 organizers rejected an urgent request from PSG to prepare for the two Champions League quarter-final matches, thereby giving Liverpool a significant advantage.
PSG and Liverpool will face each directly in the Champions League quarter-finals. The French champions, last season's winners, are aiming to defend their title, but coach Arne Slot's team is determined to settle the score.
Liverpool suffered a painful penalty shootout defeat in the round of 16 last season, and now the two teams meet again in a notable showdown. However, the Merseyside club is likely to gain a major advantage as PSG faces a potentially title-deciding Ligue 1 match against Lens sandwiched between the two Liverpool fixtures.
Previously, PSG was allowed to postpone a domestic match against Nantes, giving them extra rest between the two round of 16 matches against Chelsea. But this time, the match against Lens is expected to proceed as scheduled.
Lens head coach Peter Sage stated: “It’s too late because the match is already scheduled, unlike the previous Nantes match. I think PSG doesn’t need that to compete with us.”
In recent years, postponing matches to assist French clubs has become quite common. Nevertheless, the "French rich club" will host Liverpool just three days before facing Lens, then travel to Anfield on April 14 for the second leg.
Meanwhile, coach Arne Slot expressed great excitement about the rematch with the reigning European champions. Speaking to TNT Sports after the win over Galatasaray last week, the Dutch strategist asserted: "Last season, when we visited PSG, we were completely overwhelmed. We played well at Anfield but lost in the penalty shootout.
To be fair, they have maintained their standard. It’s almost impossible to ask them to improve further, but they have performed impressively so far.
I don’t think they will feel comfortable facing us, given what we showed tonight. Last season, we were the only team that forced them into extra time and a penalty shootout."
