Malaysia's 'two-in-one' plan for the AFF Cup

The Malaysian national team will implement a two-phase plan, with U23 coach Nafuzi Zain likely to lead the national team in the upcoming AFF Cup in July.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's head coach Peter Cklamovski will return to take charge for the larger goal at the ASEAN tournament within FIFA's system.

This plan is considered a bold strategy by Malaysian football to optimize two different tournaments with distinct approaches, especially since the AFF Cup is not part of FIFA's official schedule.

Coach Cklamovski acknowledged that giving Nafuzi the opportunity is not merely an experiment, but part of a long-term plan to build the team's strength.

“I cannot fully confirm yet, but this is the initial plan. This tournament mainly aims to build the squad and provide competitive opportunities,” he stated.

Conversely, for the FIFA ASEAN tournament, the Australian strategist is expected to directly lead Malaysia's strongest lineup, as this competition is within the official international match system.

“We will send our strongest squad for the FIFA ASEAN tournament,” he emphasized, clearly illustrating the two different approaches.

This move is expected to create an opportunity for Nafuzi to “advance,” by first leading the national team at the regional level, while also allowing young players to showcase their abilities.

However, pressure remains heavy on Malaysia as the team still craves the AFF Cup championship, a title they haven't reclaimed since 2010.

According to the draw results, Malaysia is in Group A alongside Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, and Laos for the AFF Cup, scheduled from July 24 to August 26.

With two major tournaments ahead, this “two-coach” strategy has become a focal point, as fans wait to see if it can help Malaysian football regain its glory.
