Malaysia's Asian Cup dream shattered, team blames AFC

Malaysia's dream of participating in the 2027 Asian Cup Finals not only ended with a 1-3 defeat to Vietnam last night, but was essentially "stolen" early, off the pitch.

Head coach Peter Cklamovski defended his players, stating that Malaysia truly deserved to qualify for the Finals based on their on-field performance.

According to him, what happened was not a complete failure of the team but stemmed from uncontrollable factors affecting the entire campaign.

In the final match at Thiên Trường Stadium, Malaysia finished second in Group F with 9 points. Meanwhile, Vietnam confirmed its status as the strongest team in the group by securing all 18 points to earn a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Malaysia's journey was not truly "smooth" from the start, being impacted by a major issue related to a decision by the Asian football governing body.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) previously concluded that Malaysia used an ineligible player in two crucial qualifying matches.

The consequence was that the 2-0 win over Nepal on March 25, 2025 and the 4-0 win over Vietnam on June 10, 2025 were annulled, and they were handed a 0-3 defeat according to AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Code Article 25.1.

This decision not only cost Malaysia 6 precious points but also completely altered the landscape of the team's campaign.

"If judged on the pitch, we deserved to advance, but the reality is we were affected by what happened off the pitch.

The players fought for themselves, their families, and their country. What they did is something to be proud of," he said.

In last night's match on March 31 at Thiên Trường Stadium, Malaysia was surprised by Đỗ Duy Mạnh's early goal in the 6th minute, giving the home team an advantage.

The continuous pressure from Vietnam was later concretized by two goals from Nguyễn Xuân Son in the 51st and 59th minutes, putting Malaysia in a difficult situation.

Malaysia could only salvage one goal from a penalty executed by Endrick Dos Santos in the 77th minute, but that was when it was already too late.

Coach Cklamovski believes this result does not fully reflect what happened on the pitch.

"We created many chances… four or five clear opportunities that could have changed the match. That was the moment that made the difference between victory and defeat.

I hope the Malaysian people are proud because they played with all their heart, and that is undeniable."

Malaysian players thank fans after the match

According to the latest update on FIFA's official website, Malaysia previously ranked 135th in the world has now dropped three places to position 138.

The last time Malaysia was at position 138 in the world was on April 4, 2024, reflecting a recurring decline in form.

Previously, Malaysia also plummeted from position 116 to 121 in the world last December.

That ranking drop occurred after FIFA annulled the results of three friendly matches against Cape Verde, Singapore, and Palestine.

This decision resulted in opponents being awarded a 3-0 win as part of a severe penalty from FIFA.
