A Southeast Asian team shocks by calling on fans to contribute funds for the Asian Cup.

Singapore football surprises by urging fans to donate over 10 billion Vietnamese dong to support the national team's participation in the 2027 Asian Cup.

Football Singapore has just achieved a historic milestone by securing a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup Finals., and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has taken an unprecedented step: calling on the community to donate up to 500,000 Singapore dollars (over 10 billion Vietnamese dong) to support the national team. This is seen as a long-term preparation aimed at building a sustainable foundation for the country's football.

According to information from The Straits Times, the fundraising campaign was launched by FAS on the Giving.sg platform immediately after the 1-0 victory over Bangladesh, a match that helped "The Lions" conclude the qualifying round unbeaten and win the group top spot – a significant milestone in Singapore football history.. Notably, this is the first time the Singapore national team has earned a spot in the Asian Cup through qualification, instead of a host automatic berth as in 1984, despite ranking 148th in the world – the lowest among teams participating in the finals.

FAS emphasized that contributions will help maintain "the standards behind the badge," support team preparations, develop players, and build a long-term roadmap for Singapore football, from youth levels to the national team. The message from the Association also conveyed a community spirit: "This moment belongs to all who believe in Singapore football, reflecting years of effort, discipline, and belief."

Notably, the fundraising campaign occurs just weeks after Mr. Forrest Li – FAS President and founder of Sea Limited – announced a massive sponsorship of 50 million Singapore dollars for the country's football. Of this, 10 million dollars have been disbursed since early 2026, serving national team development, youth football, and infrastructure. Mr. Li stated this could be the largest contribution from a business to Singapore football, while calling for other organizations and individuals to continue joining hands.

This move has both surprised fans and sparked curiosity about FAS's long-term strategy. Mothership noted that calling for additional community contributions after receiving tens of millions in sponsorship is "shocking," but FAS explained this is part of a plan to create a sustainable foundation, allowing fans to accompany the team towards the 2027 Asian Cup and beyond.

In reality, after over 8 hours of calling for donations, the initial amount raised was quite modest, with only 6 donors contributing a total of 330 Singapore dollars (over 6.7 million Vietnamese dong). Although this figure does not yet meet expectations, FAS believes the campaign will play a crucial role in strengthening the bond between the team and the community, while affirming the importance of fan support in Singapore football's journey to achieve major goals.
