Vietnam faces a major Southeast Asian battle right at the Asian Cup

The seed grouping is gradually emerging, with Vietnam potentially facing Indonesia or Singapore in the group stage of the 2027 Asian Cup finals.

Based on the latest FIFA rankings, the seed grouping scenario for the 2027 Asian Cup is taking shape as the 24 participating slots are nearly finalized. According to AFC regulations, teams will be divided into 4 groups, each with 6 teams, before being drawn into tournament groups consisting of 4 representatives, with each group containing teams from all four seed levels.

Ranked 99th in the world, Vietnam is placed in seed group 3, alongside Thailand, Bahrain, China, Palestine, and Tajikistan. This means Coach Kim Sang Sik's squad will avoid teams from the same group in the group stage. Notably, a scenario where Vietnam faces one of two Southeast Asian teams, Indonesia or Singapore, is entirely possible.

In seed group 1, Asia's powerhouses like Japan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, South Korea, Australia, and Uzbekistan hold absolute dominance. Meanwhile, group 2 includes formidable names such as Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, UAE, Oman, and Syria. Group 4, where Vietnam's potential opponents may come from, consists of Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, Indonesia, Kuwait, Singapore, and Lebanon or Yemen.

Being in group 3 places Vietnam in a position with many contrasting group assignment possibilities. In the most challenging scenario, the red-shirted team could land in a group with Japan, Qatar, and Indonesia or North Korea – opponents rich in physical strength and experience. This would be a major test for the Southeast Asian representative's ambition to advance deep.

Conversely, a more "comfortable" group is also entirely possible if Vietnam shares a group with Uzbekistan, Syria, and Singapore.
