Not Alonso, a renowned coach confirms desire to lead Liverpool

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could make a surprising "return" to Anfield this summer.

The former Kop captain, 45 years old, was previously rumored to be a potential candidate for the interim manager position if Arne Slot was dismissed before the season ended. However, Gerrard has ruled himself out of this race, stating he would only be willing to return to Liverpool as an assistant to a "top-tier manager".

The former England midfielder most recently managed club Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League, having previously served as head coach at Rangers and Aston Villa. Speaking on the program The Overlap, Gerrard said:

“I always have a fantastic connection with the club, and it's even stronger after leaving. If there is any role that could help the team, I am always ready to do it.”

He also did not hide his ambition to someday manage Liverpool: “What people want to know is whether I want to become Liverpool's manager in the future? Of course that is the dream. But if it's right now, to lead the team for a long period, I might not be ready yet.”

From within Liverpool, many sources indicate that Arne Slot's position remains secure at least until the end of the season. Gerrard himself also hopes the Dutch strategist will have more time to improve the situation.

Nevertheless, the former Liverpool captain kept open the possibility of returning if there is a change in the coaching seat: “That depends on who the manager is and how the conversation would go. Does he need me? What can I contribute? You need to understand the role clearly before accepting. If it's to support the manager as an assistant, I am willing to do that for Liverpool. If they believe I am the right person, I would certainly consider it.”
