Southampton creates a seismic shock, Arsenal officially shattered their dream of a treble in the 2025/26 season.

A painful 1-2 defeat against the "dark horse" Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals has officially sent Arsenal out of the competition, ending the hope of Mikel Arteta's team achieving a historic treble.

The FA Cup quarter-final match at St. Mary's witnessed an unimaginable scenario as the Premier League-leading team, Arsenal, fell to a representative from the Championship. Despite being rated superior in all aspects, the Gunners had to taste bitter defeat against a resilient and courageous Southampton, thereby becoming the next major team to halt their journey in the planet's oldest tournament.

Southampton created the biggest surprise of the FA Cup quarter-finals by defeating Arsenal 2-1 at home.

From the opening minutes, Southampton showed they were not intimidated by the North London giant. With a 14-match unbeaten streak as their foundation, the home team deployed a high-speed, high-pressure style that left Arsenal players struggling. The turning point came in the 35th minute, defender Ben White made a serious error by misjudging a headed clearance from James Bree's cross, allowing Ross Stewart to rush in and finish from close range to open the scoring.

Entering the second half, manager Mikel Arteta had to deploy his trump cards like Viktor Gyokeres and Riccardo Calafiori onto the field. The suffocating pressure finally yielded sweet fruit in the 68th minute.

From Kai Havertz's assist that set up the chance, striker Viktor Gyokeres did not miss the opportunity to head home from close range, bringing the match back to square one. It seemed the equalizer would help Arsenal reverse the tide, but a lapse in defensive concentration forced them to pay a heavy price.

In the 85th minute, as the match drifted into its final moments, substitute Shea Charles became Southampton's hero. Following Tom Fellows' favorable back pass, Charles controlled the ball confidently before executing a sharp cutback shot that defeated goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The St. Mary's stands erupted as the yellow and blue team once again surged ahead.

The remaining stoppage time witnessed the helplessness and impatience of Arsenal's stars. This defeat not only shattered the Gunners' treble dream but also raised concerns about squad strength as center-back Gabriel suffered an injury and had to leave the pitch early. Meanwhile, Southampton deservedly inscribed their name into the semi-finals at Wembley as the sole representative outside of the Premier League, continuing to write their fairy tale story in this year's FA Cup.
