Vietnam U20 coach directly points out tactics for facing Japan in Asian quarter-finals

Vietnam U20 coach Okiyama Masahiko doubles efforts to create a surprise against Japan's women's U20 team in the 2026 Women's U20 Asian quarter-finals.

On the eve of the Women's U20 Asian Cup quarter-final match, Vietnam Women's U20 head coach, Okiyama Masahikoshared noteworthy remarks during the pre-match press conference against Japan Women's U20. The Japanese strategist emphasized the team's thorough preparation and high determination, despite facing a top continental opponent.

According to Coach Okiyama, Japan is consistently rated as one of Asia's strongest teams, possessing a foundation of technical skills, tactical prowess, and modern football thinking. Therefore, Vietnam Women's U20 needs a suitable approach, especially in defensive organization and capitalizing on opportunities.

“Japan is a top-tier team in Asia, so we must analyze them thoroughly, build a solid defense, and prepare a plan focused on maximizing our limited opportunities.”

Nevertheless, the 58-year-old strategist also believes that any plan truly becomes effective only when the players reach their best physical and mental condition. He particularly stressed the recovery factor given the congested match schedule.

“The crucial thing first is ensuring the players are in good physical condition, managing fatigue both physically and mentally. Compared to Japan, we have an extra rest day, so the whole team will maximize this time for recovery and optimal preparation”, Coach Okiyama added.

Besides professional aspects, the Japanese coach also expects his players to maintain focus and competitive courage against a strong opponent. He believes that in knockout matches, even a momentary lapse in concentration can prove costly.

The match between Vietnam Women's U20 and Japan Women's U20 will take place at 4:00 PM on April 11.
