After the 2-0 win against Fulham, Coach Arne Slot is worried about Curtis Jones' injury and confirms Liverpool's preparedness for the Paris Saint-Germain rematch.
Early morning on April 12 (Vietnam time), Liverpool defeated Fulham 2-0 at Anfield, thus strengthening their position in the top five and reigniting hopes of securing a spot in the Champions League. However, Coach Arne Slot's joy from the victory was not complete as he faced another concerning injury case.
Specifically, midfielder Curtis Jones had to leave the field immediately after the first half due to a groin issue. After the match, Coach Arne Slot admitted that the player's chances of recovering for the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain are very low:
“He felt a slight problem in the groin area. I would be very surprised if a player who leaves the field can still be ready for the match next Tuesday. This is indeed our familiar story this season. After every victory, there is always another injury.”
Nevertheless, the Dutch strategist still expressed satisfaction with his players' performance, especially in the first half – where Liverpool decided the match with goals from Rio Ngumoha and Mohamed Salah:
“Certainly I am much happier than when we lost 0-4 or 0-2. In the first half we played well, had some chances before Rio had his shining moment. Just before that, I felt Fulham were playing quite well, so Rio's one-on-one situation goal was really crucial. Then Mo finished the situation very well and allowed us to enter the break comfortably.”
Slot also praised young talent Rio Ngumoha: “One of his strengths is his ability to dominate in one-on-one situations. This season he has played more and fully deserves it. When he comes on, he always performs well, influencing the match as today and against Wolves. Today he even scored, which is extremely important in football.”
Despite the victory, the Liverpool coach remained cautious: “The current situation is better than a few days ago, but that doesn't mean everything suddenly becomes perfect. We have played many matches like this this season but not always won. Today we deserved to win, though not by a large margin.”
The 45-year-old manager also emphasized the importance of keeping a clean sheet: “I am really pleased with keeping a clean sheet. That is almost a necessity in every match, especially in the upcoming one. This is an important warm-up for the week ahead, not only against PSG but also Everton. We only have two days of rest.”
Looking ahead to the rematch against PSG at Anfield, where Liverpool trail 0-2 after the first leg, Slot showed strong determination: “The fans will always stand behind us and the players will give everything to turn the situation around. I can tell you that we are ready, Anfield will also be ready for that match.”
