Barcelona is facing the opportunity to force Real Madrid into an unacceptable situation in the upcoming El Clásico, if the results continue to be unfavorable for the Royal team.
Early morning on April 10, Real Madrid once again dropped points in La Liga when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Girona at home, just three days after losing 1-2 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Meanwhile, Barcelona demonstrated impressive form by easily defeating Espanyol 4-1 in the Catalan derby. Ferran Torres scored twice, alongside goals from Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford, helping Hansi Flick's team extend their lead to 9 points on the standings with only 7 rounds left in the season.
This result puts Real Madrid at risk of having to form a guard of honor (guard of honour) for Barcelona during the match at Camp Nou on May 10. Another possible scenario is that Barcelona will officially win La Liga right when they defeat Real Madrid in the upcoming El Clásico.
If Real continues to stumble while Barcelona wins all remaining matches, the Royal team could very likely have to perform the tribute ceremony for their rival. Conversely, if Real wins all upcoming matches, Barcelona still has the chance to be crowned right during the El Clásico.
Before this major clash, Barcelona will successively face Celta Vigo, Getafe, and Osasuna, while Real Madrid will confront Alavés, Betis, and Espanyol.
In the past, Real Madrid once refused to perform the guard of honor ceremony for Barcelona in 2018, even though their rival had already won La Liga at that time. Back then, coach Zinedine Zidane explained that Barcelona also did not do the same for Real after they won the Club World Cup.
Earlier this year, Barcelona president Joan Laporta also criticized Real Madrid for not performing this ceremony after the Catalan team won the Spanish Super Cup. He emphasized that in sports, both victory and defeat require respect and fair-play spirit.
