Yamal shines, Barcelona extends lead over Real Madrid to 9 points in Liga title race

Following Real Madrid's stalemate against Girona, Barcelona seized the surprising opportunity to triumph 4-1 against Espanyol in La Liga, thus expanding their lead to 9 points at the summit of the rankings.

Espanyol aimed for their first win at Camp Nou since 2009, but they barely touched the ball in the first 10 minutes as Barcelona dominated and dictated the pace in the Catalan derby.

The visitors' situation worsened when Ferran Torres met Lamine Yamal's corner at the far post and headed in a goal, marking his first La Liga strike since January 31st.

The home team completely controlled possession, reaching up to 85% at times, making a lapse in concentration almost inevitable. Fortunately for Barcelona, that error did not result in a conceded goal.

Instead, after 25 minutes, Lamine Yamal's exceptionally delicate outside-foot pass found Torres in the central area, and the forward's skillful touch sent the ball rolling past the advancing goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic.

The Serbian goalkeeper later made an excellent double save against Eric Garcia and Fermin Lopez, preventing Espanyol from conceding further before referee Alejandro Jose Hernandez whistled to end the first half.

In the second half, the referee whistled excessively, disrupting the match's rhythm. Espanyol continued to appear stagnant in attack, with Cyril Ngonge frequently overwhelmed in duels, reflecting a forgettable afternoon for the away side.

Barcelona seemed poised to increase the score to 3-0 when Torres completed his hat-trick, but the goal was disallowed due to Garcia's offside violation. However, just a minute later, Pol Lozano unexpectedly found space outside the penalty area and unleashed a rocket-like right-footed shot, leaving Joan Garcia no chance to save.

The goal narrowing the deficit gave Espanyol renewed momentum, before Marcus Rashford missed a golden opportunity to extend Barcelona's lead. The visitors then pressed for extended periods, but Lamine Yamal accelerated to meet a through pass, outpaced Dmitrovic, and shot into the empty net.

As Espanyol merely wished to leave the pitch early, Rashford still managed to add another goal to seal the 4-1 score. This result extends Espanyol's streak of La Liga matches without a win to 14 (5 draws, 9 losses), while Barcelona extends their unbeaten run against their city rivals to 30 consecutive matches (23 wins, 7 draws).
