Mikel Arteta: 'The defeat felt like a punch in the face'

Manager Mikel Arteta could not hide his disappointment after Arsenal suffered a 1-2 loss to Bournemouth, a match he described as "a direct punch to the face," severely dampening hopes for the Premier League title.

At Emirates Stadium, Arsenal had a chance to rectify the situation after conceding an early goal from Eli Junior Kroupi. Viktor Gyokeres later equalized from a penalty, but in the 74th minute, Alex Scott scored the decisive goal, securing victory for the visiting team.

The final whistle sounded amidst jeers from the stands. Although still leading the table with a 9-point gap, Arsenal have played two more matches than Manchester City, who will face Chelsea before hosting Arsenal at Etihad in the next round. This is considered an "early final" that could determine the season's outcome.

Speaking after the match, Arteta candidly stated: "It's truly very disappointing. It felt like a punch in the face. I told the players exactly that. Now, the important thing is how we respond. The battle is still ongoing, and we will need tremendous fighting spirit."

Arteta described the loss to Bournemouth as "a direct punch to the face."

He emphasized that the team has no way back: "There is no grey area. Either we are still in the race, or we are out. And we must be much stronger and more determined than our performance today, especially when the match doesn't go as planned. The second half should have been different, but today we did too many inexplicable things."

Additionally, Arteta did not deny the pressure from Arsenal's title drought spanning over two decades: "We understand what is at stake. The club's long period without a championship adds extra pressure. But we need to focus on what we can control. We have been on the right track for the past nine months, and that's why we are in this position. Today was a setback, so we must learn, self-critique, and get back up immediately."

Next for Arsenal is a crucial Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon, before heading into the major clash with Manchester City – where their true resilience will be tested.

Regarding the negative reaction from the fans, Arteta believes it is understandable: "That's emotion. And it stems from love for the team. Today certainly wasn't a day to expect fans to be satisfied."

The defeat to Bournemouth not only cost Arsenal points but also exposed signs of instability at the most sensitive moment of the season. If they fail to regain form quickly, the dream of a title after 22 years of waiting could once again remain unfulfilled.
