HAGL made a strong impression with their win against Nam Định when the center-back pair Jairo Rodrigues and Đinh Quang Kiệt continued to shine, creating a "steel wall" in the defensive line.
Hoàng Anh Gia Lai Club is becoming the focal point of attention in V.League 2025/26, not only due to positive results but also because they possess a center-back duo with arguably the most "massive" physique in the league. Jairo Rodrigues (born 1992, height 1.90m) and the young talent Đinh Quang Kiệt (born 2007, height 1.95m) are forming a solid shield in front of goalkeeper Trần Trung Kiên (1.91m).
In round 18 of V.League, HAGL defeated Nam Định 2-1 right at Thiên Trường Stadium, in a match where the visiting team's defense played a key role. Despite the home team controlling 72% of the ball, they faced significant difficulties penetrating HAGL's tightly organized defensive system.
The biggest highlight was the performance of Jairo Rodrigues and Đinh Quang Kiệt. This duo nearly completely locked down striker Nguyễn Xuân Son, the dangerous naturalized scorer of Nam Định. With their physical advantage, aerial ability, and good situational reading, both continuously won aerial duels, rendering the opponent's crossing attempts almost ineffective.
The controversial incident in the 76th minute further demonstrated the determination of HAGL's defense. After a cross from Caio Cesar, Xuân Son jumped inside the penalty area but was affected by Quang Kiệt, leading to an unsuccessful header attempt. The Nam Định striker immediately demanded a penalty, but after consulting VAR, the referee refused. This decision partly reflected the composure and good control of the young center-back from HAGL.
Just 2 minutes after that incident, Nam Định suffered a "counterattack blow" when making a mistake in their own half. Lương Thanh Ngọc Lâm seized the opportunity, scoring the goal that sealed the 2-1 victory for the Mountain City team.
Not only solid in defense, Jairo and Quang Kiệt also displayed remarkable synergy between experience and youthful vigor. Jairo plays the commander role, while Quang Kiệt stands out with his strong tackling ability and speed. This combination helps HAGL become a "nemesis" for teams favoring a crossing-and-heading style of play.
With his current form, Đinh Quang Kiệt is emerging as one of the most promising young center backs in Vietnamese football. If he continues to maintain stable performances, the player born in 2007 could fully become a pillar for the U23, and even the National Team in the future.
