Southeast Asian fans are very surprised when Vietnam U19 futsal team suffered a heavy defeat against Russia in the friendly match.
The Vietnam U19 futsal team just experienced a forgettable match, losing heavily 0-14 to Russia U19 futsal in a series of friendly matches held in Ho Chi Minh City. This is the first defeat for coach Trịnh Hữu Thành and his players in this training session, and also a result that surprised experts and fans.
This defeat draws attention because less than two years ago, Vietnam U19 futsal had very positive performances against this same opponent. Specifically, in February 2024, the team defeated Russia U19 futsal 4-2 in the first leg, before drawing 2-2 in the subsequent rematch. Those results once showed significant progress of Vietnam's youth futsal on the international stage.
However, this rematch witnessed a huge gap in expertise. Russia U19 futsal displayed a superior style of play in speed, technique, and efficiency, continuously applying pressure and capitalizing on opportunities to score. Meanwhile, Vietnam U19 futsal faced many difficulties in organizing defense and developing attacks, leading to a defeat with a large margin.
After the match, the Southeast Asian futsal fan community had many contrasting opinions. One fan commented: "This is truly a surprising result considering previous encounters. Russia has clearly progressed very rapidly at the youth level." Another opinion agreed: "The 14-0 victory shows that Russia's youth futsal is developing strongly, surpassing in both physical fitness and tactics."
On the other hand, many believe this result does not fully reflect the actual strength of both teams. One comment stated: "In futsal, especially at the youth level, such a heavy score does not say too much. The important thing is how the players learn after each match." Another fan shared: "This is just a friendly match, mainly for testing the lineup. It shouldn't be judged too harshly based on just one defeat."
Although the result was not as expected, Vietnam U19 futsal still has a chance to rectify mistakes as the two teams will rematch on April 13. This will be an opportunity for the young players to draw lessons, adjust their playing style, and aim for a more positive performance against the strong European opponent.
