Pressure is mounting on Mikel Arteta as an Arsenal legend warns of the risk of dismissal if "The Gunners" do not secure any trophy this season.
Arsenal legend Anders Limpar has warned that manager Mikel Arteta could face the risk of losing his job if the team does not win a major trophy this season.
According to Limpar, the pressure at Emirates Stadium is higher than ever as expectations have shifted from "progress" to "must win the title." Since taking over the team in December 2019, Arteta has only secured one FA Cup and two Community Shields, a record deemed insufficient given the significant investment in the squad.
The recent 1-2 defeat against Bournemouth has further heightened tensions, raising concerns that "The Gunners" might falter in the title race against Manchester City. Limpar believes if the season ends without a trophy, the board may have to make a tough decision.
He stated: “If Arsenal does not win any trophy this season, it would be a major blow for Arteta. He has built a squad to compete in at least two competitions. If unsuccessful, Arteta is likely to be sacked.”
One of the biggest issues Limpar highlighted is the mental fortitude of Arsenal players in decisive moments. Despite possessing a talented squad, he feels the team lacks strong personalities to lead in crucial matches.
The former Swedish star questioned whether the current squad has enough "steel" compared to legendary leaders like Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira.
“In terms of talent, they are among Europe's best, even world-class. But in critical moments, you need players with a steely spirit to step up. That is what truly matters,” Limpar emphasized.
Limpar also openly criticized Arteta regarding his squad selection in domestic cup competitions. He argued that deploying a non-optimal lineup against Southampton in the FA Cup indicated that the Spanish strategist had "underestimated" this competition.
“Mikel Arteta deserves criticism for the team he chose. You cannot simply give up on the FA Cup like that. To me, it was an act of throwing away a trophy,” Limpar said.
Despite his criticisms, Limpar remains optimistic about Arsenal's chances of winning the Premier League title. He predicts "The Gunners" could clinch the title by a narrow margin, given that Manchester City may not fully capitalize on their remaining matches.
However, in European competition, he acknowledges that conquering the Champions League remains too great a challenge for the current team, and a domestic trophy might be a more realistic step forward in Arteta and his players' development.
