OFFICIAL: FIFA does not recognize Messi's title

FIFA's non-recognition of Lionel Messi's Eastern MLS title alongside Inter Miami is causing major debate, simultaneously raising conflicting views about the worth of MLS honors.

Last season, Inter Miami crushed New York City with a 5-1 score, thereby securing the Eastern region championship for the first time in history. MLS. However, according to FIFA regulations, this title is not considered an official championship at the international level.

Specifically, FIFA only recognizes the playoff system champion (i.e., the MLS Cup winner) as the national champion of the league. Meanwhile, titles such as Eastern or Western champions are merely regional and are not counted as "major trophies" in a player's achievement record.

This implies that Messi cannot increase his total number of official career trophies if Inter Miami only stops at the Eastern top spot. However, with the pink-clad team winning the MLS Cup at the end of last year, the Argentine superstar has now officially reached 47 titles—a memorable milestone in his illustrious career.

Additionally, controversy has erupted surrounding the Supporters' Shield that Inter Miami won in 2024. This award is given to the team with the best regular-season performance in MLS and has long existed within the league system, though managed by fan organizations.

Inter Miami then finished the season with 74 points (a record in MLS history) and topped the overall standings. However, FIFA's selection of this achievement to grant a spot in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has raised suspicions of favoritism, especially since Messi is the central figure.

Nevertheless, it must be affirmed that the Supporters’ Shield is an official title within the MLS framework. The contentious issue lies in its use as a criterion for international representation, as the league's longstanding tradition still considers the MLS Cup the highest honor.
