The Indonesian futsal team fails to secure the championship once more, suffering a 1-2 reverse defeat to the Thai futsal team, which signifies their second final loss within a two-month span.
Two months after their continental disappointment, the Indonesian futsal team collapses again in another final match. A 1-2 loss to the Thai futsal team in the 2026 Southeast Asian Futsal Championship results in the archipelago nation's second final defeat within a mere two-month period.
Entering the tournament as the reigning regional champion, Indonesia remained highly rated despite not having the strongest squad. Coach Hector Souto's team demonstrated resilience by overcoming several tough opponents, including a victory over the Vietnamese futsal team in the semifinals to secure a spot in the final match.
In the final, Indonesia started confidently and quickly gained an advantage. In the 16th minute, from a sharp counterattack, Andres Putra scored accurately to open the scoring. However, this lead was not maintained long as Thailand pushed forward aggressively. Just before the first half ended, the host team received a 10-meter penalty, and Itthicha Praphan successfully converted it to equalize 1-1.
In the second half, the momentum gradually shifted towards Thailand due to their experience and tenacity. Under Coach Rakphol Sainetngam's guidance, the host team continuously increased pressure. In the 31st minute, Panus Kittipanuwong delivered a decisive strike, sealing the 2-1 score and completing a courageous comeback.
During the remaining time, Indonesia switched to a power-play tactic seeking an equalizer. Despite creating some notable opportunities, including a shot that hit the crossbar in the final minutes, they could not penetrate the opponent's solid defense. Goalkeeper Theerawat Kaewwilai also made several excellent saves, helping secure Thailand's victory.
This defeat officially turns Indonesia into the former Southeast Asian champion, while extending their unfortunate runner-up streak following their loss to Iran in the Asian final in February. Meanwhile, Thailand continues to assert its regional dominance with its 17th championship title. In the third-place match, the Vietnamese futsal team secured a 4-0 victory over Australia, concluding the tournament with a convincing bronze medal.
