Barcelona's appeal regarding the controversial penalty incident was not accepted by UEFA, extinguishing all hopes of overturning the referee's decision in the match against Atletico.
The first leg of the 2026 Champions League quarter-final at Camp Nou left behind a highly controversial aftermath when Barcelona suffered a 0-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid. The focal point of the Catalan club's outrage occurred in the 54th minute, when Atletico defender Marc Pubill appeared to use his hand to play the ball inside the penalty area following a pass from goalkeeper Juan Musso.
Despite fierce protests from Barcelona players and coaching staff, the referee Istvan Kovacs and the VAR team led by Christian Dingert did not issue any sanction. Believing this was a "serious error" that altered the course of the match, Barcelona submitted a formal appeal to the highest authority in European football.
However, hopes for an investigation or an admission of error from UEFA were quickly dashed. In a statement released on April 13, 2026, UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee declared: “Following the first leg quarter-final played on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, FC Barcelona submitted an appeal concerning a referee's decision. The committee declares this appeal inadmissible.”
This ruling means the match result stands and no further investigation into the refereeing team's dialogue, as requested by Barcelona, will take place.
UEFA's decision acted as "adding fuel to the fire" for coach Hansi Flick's anger. Previously, the German strategist had not hesitated to sharply criticize the refereeing: "For me, that was clearly a red card, or more precisely a second yellow and a penalty. It feels truly unjust. The VAR today was very focused on Atletico."
He even targeted his compatriot operating the VAR room: "That's a German, so thank you Germany."
Even neutral experts like Joe Cole from TNT Sports sided with Barcelona in this incident. Cole stated that Pubill was fortunate not to be sent off after a bizarre lapse of concentration: "The ball was in play... That should have been a penalty. The rules are the rules, Barcelona were very unlucky."
With the appeal rejected, Barcelona must set aside their frustration to focus on the task of reversing the situation in the second leg at the Metropolitano. The challenge is immense as they conceded two goals and lost young center-back Pau Cubarsi due to a red card. Meanwhile, Simeone's Atletico Madrid holds every advantage to advance straight to the semi-finals.
