Manchester United's veteran at forty will renew his contract! Sir Jim Ratcliffe values his one advantage, creating a record comparable to Giggs and Van der Sar.

Manchester United veteran Tom Heaton celebrated his 40th birthday on Wednesday, officially joining the rare "Forty-Year Club" in the club's history! The club officially confirmed that Heaton has become the third registered first-team player to serve at Old Trafford beyond the age of 40 since the Premier League was established in 1992.

Previously, United's Forty-Year Club had only two members: legendary winger Ryan Giggs and distinguished goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. Compared to the aforementioned two, Heaton is clearly overshadowed, as he is merely a nominal Red Devils player, while Giggs and Van der Sar were always key starters.

Even expanding the scope to Manchester United's full 150-year history, Heaton is the fourth member of the Forty-Year Club. The other player is the legendary figure Billy Meredith, who made his last appearance for the Red Devils at the remarkable age of 46!

Heaton was part of Manchester United's youth system during Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure but never made his first-team debut. He left the Red Devils and built a successful career at clubs like Burnley, Cardiff City, Bristol City, and Aston Villa, even earning a call-up to the England national team.

Heaton also made several spectacular saves in Premier League matches, thwarting his former club Manchester United. During Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's management, he returned to United, becoming a Red Devils player once again, and finally made his delayed debut in the 2021 Champions League. However, Heaton has only appeared three times for the team so far.

Despite earning a weekly wage of £40,000, Heaton's primary role is not playing matches but serving as a player and goalkeeper coach during training. His support in training is so valuable that the England national team even called him up during the 2024 European Championship finals to act as a training goalkeeper, making him England's top training goalkeeper. Former "Three Lions" manager Gareth Southgate stated: "Experience tells us that facing a major tournament is a heavy challenge for the goalkeeper group. Tom (Heaton) can play an indispensable role on the training pitch, providing support for Jordan (Pickford), Aaron (Ramsdale), and Dean (Henderson)."

Under Ruben Amorim's management last summer, Manchester United activated Heaton's contract extension option; his current contract expires in June. British media confirm that, aside from Harry Maguire who has already renewed and Kobbie Mainoo who is about to sign a new deal, Heaton will be another current player receiving a one-year contract. The Athletic confirms that United is negotiating another short-term contract with Heaton to keep him as a training player next season.

Although Heaton will not play matches, his status as a homegrown academy player is very useful for Premier League and Champions League registrations. Moreover, Heaton has extensive connections within the first-team dressing room and is widely regarded as a key member of the leadership team, working alongside Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui.

If Heaton agrees to continue for another year, and with Senna Lammers firmly holding the starting position, Manchester United only needs to resolve the issue of the second goalkeeper for next season. This season's backup goalkeeper Altay Bayındır has agreed to a contract with Turkish Süper Lig club Beşiktaş and will leave once the clubs finalize the transfer fee; André Onana, loaned to Turkish club Trabzonspor, will return upon the loan expiry. The 30-year-old Cameroon goalkeeper intends to stay, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to sell him.

Manchester United's optimal plan is to recall 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper Radek Vítek, who joined Championship club Bristol City this season, to compete with Lammers. If Vítek is unwilling to be a backup, he may be loaned out again or sold directly, and the transfer department will then choose to sign a new goalkeeper.
