SHOCK: Malaysia faces Vietnam U17 in the final despite age disadvantage

The current Malaysia U17 squad consists mostly of players who are only 15 years old and have never competed internationally.

After securing a 2-1 victory over Australia, Vietnam U17 excellently earned their spot in the final. The opponent for Coach Cristiano Roland and his team will be Malaysia U17, who overcame Laos U17 with a 3-0 score in the other semifinal. Reflecting on the heavy defeat against Vietnam U17, the Malaysian strategist admitted the team faced considerable pressure from public opinion. He stated that after that loss, the entire team was heavily criticized, but the crucial point is that the coaching staff always clearly understood the reality that this is essentially a U16 squad, with many players just 15 years old and experiencing their first international competition environment.

According to Coach Shukor Adan, the young players need time to adapt and mature. He emphasized that the defeat against Vietnam was a valuable lesson rather than a shock. What satisfied him most was not the result, but how the players responded afterward. Particularly in the crucial match against Indonesia, the whole team displayed a strong fighting spirit, never giving up, and played with significantly greater confidence.

Malaysia U17 has also shown clear progress since their loss to Vietnam U17 in the first group stage match. Malaysia U17 subsequently defeated Indonesia, Timor Leste, and overcame Laos in the semifinal to advance to the final. Although Vietnam U17 is rated considerably higher, given the nature of a final match, Malaysia U17 could still harbor many unpredictable factors.

Securing a place in the final gives Malaysia U17 additional motivation to aim for the championship, a title they last won in 2019. Meanwhile, Vietnam U17 aims for their 4th championship to become the most successful team in the tournament's history.

A notable point: In their two previous final appearances, Malaysia U17 both achieved victory. They defeated Indonesia (2013) and Thailand (2019) to claim the crown. This is a factor Vietnam U17 must consider, as Malaysia always performs exceptionally well in finals.
