The Malaysian Football Association drew attention by praising the runner-up journey of Malaysia's U16 team at the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship, despite losing 0-3 to Vietnam's U17 team in the final.
On April 24th evening, the Malaysian Football Association (FAM) sparked controversy by releasing a message about the journey of its youth team at the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship, despite the heavy defeat in the final match.
On its official communication channel, FAM posted the message: “Congratulations Malaysia! The Malaysia U16 team, led by Shukor Adan, secured the runner-up position after losing 0-3 to Vietnam in the final held at Gelora Delta Stadium.”
This message quickly attracted attention from regional fans, especially when FAM emphasized the age factor: the Malaysian squad was essentially a U16 team but still advanced deep into the final match. This is seen as a positive signal, reflecting the potential development of Malaysian youth football in the future.
In the final match, Vietnam's U17 team demonstrated clear superiority. Coach Cristiano Roland's squad actively controlled the game, continuously applied pressure, and effectively exploited gaps in the opponent's defense. Meanwhile, Malaysia faced many difficulties in ball deployment and almost failed to create significant opportunities. The 0-3 defeat partly reflected the gap in match experience and competitive composure between the two teams.
Although unable to claim the championship, securing the runner-up position with a team one year younger remains an encouraging achievement for Malaysia. FAM views this as an important foundation for the team to continue improving, aiming for larger goals at regional and continental levels in the coming period.
On the other hand, Vietnam's U17 team deserved the championship. The convincing 3-0 victory allowed the red-shirted team to enter history with its fourth title, thereby becoming the most successful team in the tournament, surpassing opponents like Australia's U17 and Thailand's U17.
After the tournament, Coach Cristiano Roland and his team will focus on the next challenge at the continental arena. Vietnam's U17 team is scheduled to face Yemen's U17 team in Saudi Arabia on May 7th, within the framework of preparations for the upcoming U17 Asia campaign.
