After ascending to the throne as champions of the 2026 Southeast Asian U17 Championship, Vietnam U17 does not have much downtime and promptly steps into a new cycle with larger objectives on the continental and global arenas.

Vietnam U17 is ready for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Finals

The 3-0 victory over Malaysia U17 in the final not only helped coach Cristiano Roland and his team secure their fourth championship, but also affirmed their top regional status with an unbeaten record (19 goals scored, only 1 conceded). However, this title is merely the starting point for a challenging journey ahead.

According to the plan, the entire team will return home on April 26 before quickly regrouping to prepare for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Finals 2026. The team is scheduled to depart for Saudi Arabia on May 3, heading towards the tournament which runs from May 7 to May 24, featuring the 16 strongest teams from the continent.

In this tournament, Vietnam U17 is placed in Group C alongside formidable opponents: Korea Republic U17, UAE U17, and Yemen U17. This is considered a real test for the Southeast Asian champions, as they face top Asian football nations. According to the format, teams play a single round-robin, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals.

Notably, the AFC U17 Asian Cup Finals 2026 not only carries the significance of competing for the title, but also serves as a gateway to the world's biggest youth-level stage. Specifically, the eight teams reaching the quarter-finals will earn qualification for the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026.

This means that if they advance past the group stage and participate in the quarter-finals, Vietnam U17 will officially secure a ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026 Finals – the tournament scheduled to take place in Qatar in November 2026. This is a historic opportunity for Vietnamese youth football to further establish itself on the world map. Up to now, 30 out of 48 slots for the global youth football festival have been determined, and Asian and African representatives will complete the remaining tickets through their continental championships.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, coach Cristiano Roland expressed confidence but also caution: the whole team will strive to prepare thoroughly to be ready to compete with the strong opponents in Asia.

Clearly, after the glory in Southeast Asia, Vietnam U17 now faces a new and challenging journey. But based on their performance so far, fans can rightly expect further progress, not only on the continental level but also reaching out to the World Cup stage.
