The AFC U17 Asian Championship sees major changes; will Vietnam U17's World Cup chances be affected?

The AFC U17 Asian Championship 2026 has just experienced a major shake-up right before kick-off, with North Korea U17 withdrawing. Will Vietnam U17's plan to secure a World Cup ticket be impacted?

North Korea U17's withdrawal somewhat affects Vietnam U17's opportunity to qualify for the World Cup

This decision forces the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to adjust its organizational plans, while also leading to several notable consequences related to the race for tickets to the 2026 U17 World Cup.

Accordingly, Group D – originally featuring North Korea U17, Uzbekistan, Australia, and India – now only has three teams. Due to the tight timeframe, AFC will not add a replacement team, meaning the teams in this group will play fewer matches compared to the other groups.

Even though they are not in the same group, Vietnam U17 will still be indirectly affected by this change. Coach Cristiano Roland's team is in Group C alongside South Korea, UAE, and Yemen, but the competition landscape for qualifying for the 2026 U17 World Cup could be significantly impacted.

According to the format, the eight teams advancing to the quarter-finals will directly qualify for the 2026 U17 World Cup. Additionally, if host Qatar advances from the group stage, an extra spot will be awarded to the best-performing third-place team.

It is precisely regarding this criterion that North Korea U17's withdrawal creates disruption. When a group has only three teams, AFC is likely to recalculate the performance of third-place teams by excluding results against the bottom team to ensure fairness. This inadvertently puts teams in groups with four teams, including Vietnam U17, at risk of losing advantages in points or goal difference.

In other words, if Vietnam U17 cannot reach the quarter-finals and must compete for the "wildcard" spot as the third-place team in Group C, their chance of going to the World Cup will become more fragile due to the influence of this non-technical disruption.

According to FIFA's allocation, Asia has a total of 9 spots for the 2026 U17 World Cup (including host Qatar). Therefore, any minor changes in format or tournament structure can significantly impact the opportunities of the teams.

North Korea U17's official withdrawal makes the AFC U17 Asian Championship 2026 more unpredictable, and Vietnam U17 will need to exert maximum effort to determine their own fate, rather than relying on scenarios dependent on results from other groups.
