After 118 days, Tottenham's first win still hasn't lifted them out of the relegation zone.

The minimal win against Wolves allowed Tottenham Hotspur to break their dismal 118-day run in the Premier League. Yet, the harsh irony is that even with a full three points, the London team hasn't escaped the bottom group, continuing to confront a clear relegation risk.

The sole goal of the match came in the 82nd minute, when midfielder João Palhinha capitalized on a chaotic corner situation to tap in from close range. It was an unattractive, even somewhat lucky, scoring moment, but it held immense value for Spurs, who were desperately seeking their first win after 15 consecutive draws and losses.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi couldn't hide his emotions, rushing onto the field to celebrate with his players. This was also his first victory since taking over Tottenham, helping the team avoid an unwelcome milestone: equaling the 16-match winless record in the domestic league from the 1934-35 season.

But Spurs' joy was quickly brought back to reality. In a simultaneous match, West Ham scored a late goal to defeat Everton, maintaining a safe gap from the relegation zone. This result left Tottenham in 18th place, two points behind the safe group with only four rounds remaining in the season.

Palhinha celebrates the goal

The events at Molineux clearly reflected Spurs' current state: lacking sharpness, confidence, and vulnerability. Throughout the first half, neither team managed a single shot on target. Tottenham held more possession but were stuck in execution, while Wolves—already relegated—still showed nuisance in counter-attacking situations.

Tottenham's problems worsened as they continued to lose personnel. Key striker Dominic Solanke left the field late in the first half due to injury, while playmaker Xavi Simons even departed on a stretcher after a bad landing. Losing both attacking spearheads left Spurs nearly without any options for creating breakthroughs.

In a stalemate, the turning point came from a set piece. After Richarlison's faulty shot, the ball inadvertently found Palhinha, and the Portuguese midfielder didn't miss the chance. That was also one of Tottenham's rare shots on target in a match poor in technical quality.

Spurs pay the price for the win with Xavi Simons' injury

Nevertheless, to preserve the win, Spurs also relied on goalkeeper Antonín Kinský's brilliant moment. In the final added minute, he flew to block João Gomes' dangerous free-kick, securing the precious three points for the visitors. This was a commendable performance by Kinský, especially after his previous difficult period.

After the match, De Zerbi tried to convey a positive message: "We know what we can do. One win can change everything. The goal is to get four more wins." However, reality shows Tottenham's path to survival remains extremely tough. They are not only behind in points but also disadvantaged in goal difference, while the upcoming schedule includes troublesome opponents like Aston Villa and Chelsea.

The win after 118 days of waiting is clearly a crucial morale boost. But looking at the unconvincing performance and the growing injury list, Spurs fans have more reasons to worry than to be optimistic.
