Philippines Media: 'Vietnam Dominates Malaysia from Southeast Asia to Asia'

Two consecutive victories against Malaysia at different levels have drawn attention to Vietnamese football, as Philippines media made a decisive assessment.

This statement quickly spread, attracting significant interest from regional fans, especially as Vietnamese football has consistently achieved overwhelming results against familiar opponents.

This viewpoint is not without basis, as within less than a month, Vietnamese teams at two levels have successively defeated Malaysia with clear margins. From youth competitions to the national team level, a familiar scenario has repeatedly unfolded, reinforcing the Philippines media's assessment of Vietnamese football's superiority over regional rivals.

Specifically, on April 24th, Vietnam U17 concluded their journey at the 2026 Southeast Asia U17 Championship with a convincing 3-0 victory over Malaysia U17 in the final. Coach Cristiano Roland's team started proactively, applying pressure early and soon scored the opening goal through Quý Vương from a corner situation. Earlier, Sỹ Bách had also warned with a shot hitting the post in the 6th minute.

The dominant situation continued throughout the remainder of the match. In the first-half stoppage time, Văn Dương utilized Nguyễn Lực's clever through pass to increase the score to 2-0. In the second half, Malaysia U17 had to push forward but couldn't create a difference, while Văn Dương completed a double in the 55th minute after Trí Dũng's assist, securing a 3-0 victory and the 4th championship title for Vietnam U17.

Earlier, on March 31st, the Vietnam National Team also demonstrated superior strength by defeating Malaysia 3-1 in the final match of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Despite a cautious start and facing a dangerous lob from Faisal Halim, the home team still advanced thanks to Duy Mạnh's opening goal from a corner situation. The match situation thereafter completely favored Vietnam.

In the second half, Xuân Son became the focal point with consecutive headed goals, helping Vietnam lead 3-0. Malaysia could only score one consolation goal from a penalty by Endrick after Văn Hậu's foul. Ultimately, the 3-1 victory not only secured Vietnam's top position in the group but also convincingly earned them a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup Finals.
