According to TTXVN's correspondent in the Middle East, Iran's team is in Group G alongside Egypt, New Zealand, and Belgium – one of the most fiercely competitive groups in this year's tournament. This is considered a major challenge for coach Amir Ghalenoei and his squad, as all opponents possess disciplined playing styles and strong physical foundations.

During preparations, the Iran Football Federation confirmed the team will play a friendly match against North Macedonia during a training camp in Turkey. This is part of the second phase in the plan to prepare for World Cup 2026 and falls within a carefully constructed schedule aimed at exposing Iran's team to opponents with similar tactical discipline and physical strength. Experts believe this is a necessary approach, especially since Iran must face teams considered very "tough" in the group stage.

North Macedonia's national team is known for its ability to surprise major football powers. Notably, they defeated Italy in a World Cup 2022 qualifying match. North Macedonia's current squad boasts quality players like Eljif Elmas and experienced goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski, promising to provide a crucial test for Iran ahead of the tournament.

For Iran, the friendly match is seen as a vital test in finalizing the squad, particularly before facing strong opponents like Belgium. Coach Ghalenoei is focusing on strengthening defensive capabilities and transitioning to attacking phases to build a team capable of competing at the highest level.

However, beyond the professional plan, Iran's future participation in World Cup 2026 remains uncertain due to political tensions involving the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently affirmed that Iranian players would still be welcomed at this year's tournament, while dismissing claims that the U.S. government demanded Iran not participate.

According to some sources, U.S. special envoy Paolo Zampolli previously made a controversial proposal by suggesting replacing Iran with Italy's national team at World Cup 2026. However, this idea was immediately rejected by Italy itself, as Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated that granting Italy the spot was "impossible and inappropriate," emphasizing the principle that "qualification must be earned on the pitch." Iran's embassy in Rome also opposed envoy Zampolli's idea, stating Italy does not need "political privilege" to prove its football status.

In a context where they must handle both professional preparations and off-field factors, Iran's national team's journey to World Cup 2026 remains a story full of potential upheaval, reflecting the intertwining of sports and politics on the international stage.
