Bruno Fernandes assists as Manchester United's 2-1 win secures Champions League return! Carrick emulates Mourinho, explains three-at-the-back reasoning

Manchester United secured a 2-1 home victory over Brentford, with Casemiro and Sesko scoring in the first half, and Bruno Fernandes assisting the second goal, closing in on a Premier League record. This win not only extended United's perfect home record against the Bees but also essentially guaranteed their Champions League spot. They could clinch it as early as Saturday if Newcastle defeats Brighton at home; if Brighton wins, United can secure a top-five finish by beating Liverpool on Sunday.

Carrick made two changes to the starting lineup: Maguire returned from suspension to replace Mazraoui, partnering Edan Haven in central defense, while Amad Diallo took the injured Cunha's place as the left winger in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

United's recent tactic has been to outscore opponents due to their shaky defense, and this match followed that pattern. Early on, Kobbie Mainoo, soon to renew his contract, surged through Brentford's defense into the box and passed to Amad before the goalkeeper intervened. Unfortunately, the out-of-form Ivory Coast international missed the open goal. Amad later had another chance, heading Bruno Fernandes' cross weakly, allowing the keeper to save it.

Fortunately, United didn't wait long for their first goal. In the 11th minute, Bruno Fernandes delivered a corner from the right, Maguire headed it across at the far post, and Casemiro nodded it in at the opposite post, putting United 1-0 ahead against Brentford.

This was Casemiro's ninth goal; he kissed the badge in celebration, and Old Trafford fans again sang "one more year," though that outcome is already certain not to happen.

Brentford had been on a good run and created numerous chances in this match, even outshooting United. However, the Bees lacked sharpness in finishing, especially their top scorer Igor Thiago. The Brazilian striker, trailing Haaland by three goals in the scoring charts, had opportunities to close the gap but squandered them.

Thiago first stumbled and fell when faced with Diogo Dalot's tackle; later, he hesitated in a clear one-on-one situation, allowing Haven to抢先一脚铲射, with Rams making a crucial save to avert the danger.

United goalkeeper Sena Rams was also one of the standout performers in the first half, saving another potential own goal from Haven to keep the net intact. Rams made five successful saves overall, three of them while United led 1-0. Interestingly, two of those saves came from Haven!

Amad continued to waste chances, his rushed positioning leading to a clear offside when Bruno Fernandes passed, though he put the ball in the net, it was naturally disallowed. Since 2026, this €40 million winger has not contributed to any goals.

Casemiro's goal masked his recent defensive issues; fortunately, 20-year-old Mainoo has been very proactive in these two matches. His tackle initiated a United attack, culminating in Bruno Fernandes' long run and assist to Sesko, who rounded a defender to score, making it 2-0 at halftime.

This was Sesko's 10th Premier League goal and 11th overall, making him the team's top scorer. He celebrated with a jump,致敬他的篮球偶像迈克尔·乔丹. However, fans cheered Bruno Fernandes louder—his 19th Premier League assist this season leaves him just one short of the record held by De Bruyne and Henry, with four games left to break it.

Seeing United's leaky defense, Carrick decided at halftime to emulate his former boss Mourinho, "parking the bus" in the second half to preserve the lead. He substituted the struggling Amad with Mazraoui as the right-sided center-back, aiming to strengthen flank defense and prevent Brentford from creating more chances.

This marked United's first use of a three-at-the-back system since Ruben Amorim's departure. Focusing on tight defense, United were dominated by Brentford in the second half but held on for the win, giving Carrick his ninth victory in 13 matches as manager.

Brentford's genuinely threatening attacks were scarce; Thiago continued his "missed chances" trend, failing to connect with a teammate's cross even from an offside position. His partner Vatara performed better, heading against the post, allowing United to escape.

In the 88th minute, Brentford's Mathias Jensen scored a spectacular goal, narrowing the gap to 2-1. But it was too late; United nervously preserved their one-goal advantage to secure all three points at home. However, Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw sustained injuries in the second half; the Portuguese stalwart played the full match, while Shaw had to leave due to injury.

After this win, United lead sixth-place Brighton by 11 points; they need just two more points to return to the Champions League. That's theoretical, though—even if they gain no further points, their top-five position won't change.

Explaining the switch to three center-backs in the second half, Carrick said: "At halftime, despite leading by two goals, we were too open at times, so we adjusted tactically. For most of the second half, we improved our control. The opponent had some chances late on, but we stayed focused and defended the box well."

On the effectiveness of the three-back system, Carrick commented: "Scoring the second goal just before halftime made things more favorable. The coaching staff noticed gaps appearing that needed better protection. The tactical change had a very positive effect for much of the second half. Sometimes such adjustments work, sometimes not. Today our main goal was to secure a good result; given the halftime score, holding firm was our choice at that moment."

The United manager added: "At this stage of the year, football is about results. United needed all three points, and now we have two consecutive wins. Everyone is pleased to achieve victories like ours. Tonight was primarily about getting points, and now we prepare for another big match this weekend (against Liverpool)."

Statistics show that since Carrick took charge, United have earned 29 points in the Premier League, more than any other team, with a total record of 13 wins, 9 draws, and 2 losses. He appears increasingly closer to being confirmed as the permanent manager of the Red Devils.
