Manchester United suffers a heavy blow in the Premier League

Despite Manchester United's recent important win over Brentford, Luke Shaw's sudden injury casts serious uncertainty on his potential participation in England's World Cup lineup.

Early on April 28th, Manchester United firmly solidified their third-place position in the Premier League standings after a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford. However, the joy for manager Michael Carrick and his team was incomplete as left-back Luke Shaw suffered an injury and had to leave the field in the 70th minute.

Shaw's condition is particularly concerning because he had an exceptional season in terms of fitness. Before this incident, the 30-year-old star had started every Premier League match this season, surpassing his own appearance record from the 2020/21 campaign.

In the second half, Shaw unexpectedly sat down on the pitch and signaled for medical attention despite no specific collision. He covered his mouth while speaking with the doctor to avoid lip-reading before slowly walking off the field, replaced by Leny Yoro.

This injury not only worries Manchester United ahead of their upcoming major clash with Liverpool on Sunday, but also indirectly accelerates the closing of Shaw's World Cup prospects. Under manager Thomas Tuchel's tenure with the England national team, Shaw has yet to receive an official call-up.

The German strategist previously hinted at the possibility of recalling Shaw last August when he stated: “It was a very close decision. I just wanted him to get a bit more playing time. He looked very fit, very determined.” However, since then, while Shaw has been striving to regain his peak performance rhythm, Tuchel has shifted focus towards younger talents like Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

With the World Cup now only weeks away, a muscle injury at this moment could be the final blow to this veteran defender's hopes. Tuchel also emphasized that the most recent training camp was "the last opportunity to familiarize ourselves with new players", indicating he already has a fairly stable 26-player framework.

The last time Shaw wore the "Three Lions" jersey was the Euro 2024 final. If the injury recurs severely as in late 2024 (when he missed 26 matches), Luke Shaw would not only leave a major gap in Michael Carrick's lineup but also miss out on the world's biggest football festival in North America.
