Having been away from Turkey for almost a year, "The Special One" Jose Mourinho continues to amaze the global football community by escalating his legal dispute with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to the European Court of Human Rights.
This controversial lawsuit stems from the heated events during Fenerbahce's dramatic 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor in November 2024. Furious at a series of VAR decisions, the 63-year-old manager, then coaching Fenerbahce, did not hesitate to launch severe criticism in the post-match press conference. He bluntly declared that the Turkish Super Lig "stinks" and insisted there was no reason for international viewers to be interested in the league.
In response to the Portuguese tactician's statements, the TFF immediately imposed a fine of 600,000 lira (approximately $13,000) along with a one-match touchline ban. Turkey's highest football authority accused "The Special One" of deliberately tarnishing the federation's reputation and devaluing the league.
Refusing to accept the punishment, Mourinho and his team took an unprecedented step by filing a complaint directly with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg, France. According to the latest announcement on the ECHR's website, the court has officially accepted the case for review and requested the Turkish government to submit a written explanation.
In the lawsuit submitted to the international court, Mourinho directly targeted Turkey's sports judicial system, alleging that the TFF's Disciplinary Board and Referee Committee are entirely lacking in independence. He claimed these bodies are mere "puppets" manipulated directly by the federation's president and executive board.
Additionally, the TFF was sharply criticized for failing to provide a clear written explanation with legal reasoning behind the penalty, thereby depriving the former Chelsea manager of his right to a fair defense. The 63-year-old coach argued that punishing a coach for speaking the truth about refereeing constitutes a severe violation of freedom of speech.
Currently, Mourinho is expected to be appointed as the head coach of Real Madrid after the club's presidential election concludes this weekend. The 63-year-old tactician is reported to have signed a contract to move to the Bernabeu from Benfica.
