World Cup 2026: When Cairo Became a Giant Stadium

At the Arkan commercial complex in Sheikh Zayed, west of Cairo, the World Cup atmosphere had been heating up hours before kickoff. The focal point of all activities was Egypt’s top football star – Mohamed Salah. An experience zone organized by telecom company Vodafone attracted a large crowd of fans with photo booths, complimentary souvenir printing, and technology that allowed participants to don the national team jersey or stand next to Salah in commemorative pictures. Large posters of the forward, who plays for Liverpool (UK) club Liverpool, became a popular "check-in" spot for fans.

Not only young people, but entire families brought their children to join the football festival. Even some individuals in wheelchairs were present to immerse themselves in the passionate atmosphere. For many Egyptians, the Egyptian, the World Cup is not merely a sporting event, but occasion the community to share national pride.

At the cafes around hundreds of fans filled the rows of tables in front of big screens. The sounds of match commentary, cheers, and applause after every play created the characteristic scene of football nights in Cairo.

Fan emotions peaked when Egypt unexpectedly took the lead against Belgium. Cheers erupted across the area, with many leaping to their feet and embracing each other in sheer joy. However, that happiness did not last long.
