Patrik Lê Giang and the fierce competition in the Vietnam national team

The presence of overseas Vietnamese goalkeeper Lê Giang Patrik has intensified the battle for the goalkeeper role in the Vietnam national team like never before. Nevertheless, to earn a starting place under coach Kim Sang Sik, the shot-stopper from Công An TP.HCM must face numerous significant obstacles.

Lê Giang Patrik's first call-up tothe Vietnam national teamcan be seen as one of the special highlights of the training camp preparing for the ASEAN Cup 2026.

"I believe this is only the beginning,"Lê Giangshared with emotion after receiving the good news. But in reality, the journey ahead for the 1m88 goalkeeper will not be easy. Because the Vietnam national team has never had so many quality and competitive goalkeepers as it does now.

At this moment, the number one position in the Vietnam national team's goal is clearly not yet Lê Giang's, despite his successful season with Công An TP.HCM, which included winning the National Cup and finishing in the top 5 of the V-League. Coach Kim Sang Sik still has two names in hand that are rated as more experienced and having greater advantages: Đặng Văn Lâm and Trần Trung Kiên.

Đặng Văn Lâm has long been a symbol of stability in the Vietnam national team's goal. The overseas Vietnamese goalkeeper from Russia possesses extensive experience in major tournaments from the time ofCoach Park Hang Seoup to the present.

More importantly, Coach Kim Sang Sik is someone who values experience and safety. That is why Văn Lâm is still regarded as a reliable choice in big matches, especially when the Vietnam national team is preparing for important tournaments.

Meanwhile, Trung Kiên represents the future of Vietnamese football. The young goalkeeper from HAGL has an impressive height of 1m95 and has had opportunities to play at both the U23 and national team levels.

Despite his youth, Trung Kiên is rated as having great potential due to his age advantage and understanding of the coach's tactical philosophy. Trung Kiên is currently a formidable opponent for any goalkeeper on the Vietnam national team.

In that context, Lê Giang steps into the national team with both expectations and pressure. Experts highly regard this overseas Vietnamese goalkeeper for his situational judgment, quick reflexes, and especially his footwork skills. This factor is very suitable for modern football trends and the way CoachKim Sang Sik builds his playing style.

However, Lê Giang's disadvantage is that he has never played for the Vietnam national team at any level. Integration, communication skills, tactical adaptation, and especially competitive attitude are things the coaching staff will want to thoroughly test before giving him a starting opportunity.

The current Vietnam national team is not limited to Văn Lâm or Trung Kiên. Names like Nguyễn Filip, Nguyễn Văn Việt, Nguyễn Đình Triệu, or Văn Bình are always on the waiting list and ready to be called up at any time.

This shows that the competition for the goalkeeper position on the Vietnam national team is much more intense than in the past. From a positive perspective, this is a very encouraging sign for Vietnamese football. A strong team always needs quality competition in every position, especially the goalkeeper role, which greatly determines the success of the entire collective.

For Lê Giang personally, he has never been closer to a chance to play for the Vietnam national team than now. But to turn that dream into reality, he must not only overcome his competitors in the goal but also learn to handle the pressure.
