In a key Group B match of the World Cup concluded on June 19 Beijing time, the Asian Cup champions Qatar men's football team suffered a 0-6 thrashing by hosts Canada, experiencing their first defeat and remaining winless after two rounds, on the verge of elimination.
This also marked the biggest loss for an Asian side in the tournament so far, equaling Curacao's 1-7 defeat against Germany and becoming the joint-largest margin of victory in this World Cup.

In the first round, Qatar snatched a last-minute equalizer against the strong European side Switzerland to earn their first ever World Cup point, raising some expectations. However, against the hosts Canada, they collapsed from the start, conceding two goals in the 16th and 29th minutes, trailing 0-3 by halftime, and sealing their fate early.
What's more, Qatar received two red cards during the match, especially the second one in the 54th minute when Madibo's dangerous foul caused Canada's Kone to suffer a severe leg injury with a deformed shin, forcing him off on a stretcher. With two men down, Qatar conceded three more goals, ultimately enduring a humiliating 0-6 defeat.

This 0-6 loss and the two red cards also created several embarrassing records for Qatar. First, they became the first Asian team in World Cup history to receive two red cards in a single match. Second, they are also the third team to have two players sent off within the first 60 minutes of a World Cup game.
Third, the two red cards made them the fastest team to have two players sent off in a World Cup match since the USA team in 2006 (whose second red came at the 47th minute).
Fourth, the red card given to Homam Ahmed in the 33rd minute was the fastest red card in a World Cup match since a Colombian player received one in the 4th minute during the 2018 World Cup.
Fifth, Qatar also became the first team in World Cup history to have two red cards and score an own goal in the same match.

After two rounds, Qatar sits at the bottom of the group with only one point and a goal difference of -6, making their advancement prospects very slim. In the final round, they must beat Bosnia by a large margin to have any chance of qualifying as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
