Coach Kim Sang Sik has selected Khoa Ngô for the Vietnam national team as they gear up for the 2026 ASEAN Cup. This recognition comes after a standout season with Ho Chi Minh City Police FC. Yet, the 2006-born footballer realizes that this marks just the beginning of a demanding road ahead.
Khoa Ngô is one of the most talked-about names in the list of 28 players called up to the Vietnam national team for the2026 ASEAN Cup.
Among a host of experienced figures and naturalized stars attracting attention, the appearance of this overseas Vietnamese player born in 2006 brings a fresh feeling and high expectations from fans.

Coach Kim Sang Sik clearly saw something special inKhoa Ngô. In the 2025/26 season, the now 20-year-old player contributed to his team finishing in the top five of the V-League and, notably, winning the National Cup. Khoa Ngô scored 4 goals in 14 matches for the club since arriving in Vietnam.

Although not the most outstanding star in the squad, Khoa Ngô projects the image of a modern player with great speed, quick decision-making, and passionate play.Coach Kim Sang Sikwants a breath of fresh air.

However, being called up to the Vietnam national team is only an initial achievement; whether he will stay depends on many factors.Coach Kim Sang Sikis ready to give opportunities to new players, but is also very strict in selecting the right ones.
In fact, Khoa Ngô's contributions in the latter part of the season gradually declined. As opponents began to study his playing style more closely, he no longer created as many breakthroughs as in his early appearances. This shows that Khoa Ngô still needs a lot of improvement to maintain consistency at the highest level of football.
The biggest limitation of this overseas Vietnamese player is his physique. More importantly, the competition in the Vietnam national team's attack is extremely fierce. Coach Kim Sang Sik currently has many quality options up front, including Hai Long, Đình Bắc, Văn Khang, Ngọc Mỹ, Văn Đô, Gia Hưng, Việt Cường, Quang Hải, as well as naturalized players Hoàng Hên and Tài Lộc.
Compared to his seniors, Khoa Ngô is still a relatively inexperienced name. He has never been through many major international tournaments and has not spent a long time playing in Vietnam. Communication barriers, tactical adaptation, and the pressure of the national team are all significant challenges.
Vietnamese football has previously witnessed many overseas Vietnamese players who were highly anticipated but could not stay in the national team. Some failed to adapt to the playing environment, some did not meet tactical requirements, and others lacked the necessary consistency. These are important lessons for Khoa Ngô to understand that talent is only a starting condition.
Nevertheless, being given the opportunity by Coach Kim Sang Sik remains a positive sign for both Khoa Ngô himself and Vietnamese football. The national team needs more young, energetic, and eager-to-compete players.
At 20 years old, Khoa Ngô's journey still lies far ahead. Being included in the list of 28 players preparing for the 2026 ASEAN Cup is already an honor for the midfielder who recently returned from Australia to play in Vietnam.
