The VFF has chosen the Vietnam U21 squad for ASIAD 2026 to build strength for the 2027 SEA Games and the 2028 Olympic qualifying rounds.
The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has officially selected the team Vietnam U21 to participate in ASIAD 2026 in Japan instead of sending the U23 squad as usual. This decision reflects Vietnam football's long-term investment strategy, while also opening a valuable opportunity for young players to gain experience on the continental stage.
According to the plan reported by the VFF and approved by the sports management authorities, the participants for ASIAD 2026 will be players aged 21 and under. This strategic move aims to prepare resources for key objectives of Vietnamese football in the 2027-2028 period, rather than focusing only on short-term results at the Asian Games.
The immediate goal for this group of players is the 34th SEA Games in 2027. At that time, men's football will continue to apply the U22 age limit, meaning the current U21 players will become the core of the team. Competing at ASIAD allows them to test themselves against top Asian opponents, boosting their confidence and gaining international match experience.
Looking further ahead, the VFF is targeting the Olympic qualifiers through the 2028 AFC U23 Asian Cup. This is considered a key objective for Vietnam's youth football in the coming years. After finishing third at the 2026 U23 Asian Cup, Vietnamese football hopes to maintain its competitive edge in this tournament. If they remain among the leading teams in Asia, the chance to qualify for the 2028 Olympics could become a reality.
Apart from professional considerations, the decision to send Vietnam U21 to ASIAD also stems from scheduling issues. ASIAD 2026 will take place from September 19 to early October, which largely overlaps with the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup for the national team. Given that coach Kim Sang Sik needs the strongest squad to defend the Southeast Asian title, many outstanding U23 players are likely to be called up to the senior team.
Therefore, giving the U21 generation this opportunity is seen as a reasonable option that brings multiple benefits. Not only does it allow the national team to prepare optimally for important tournaments, but this decision also enables the young generation of players to test themselves on a big stage. This is expected to be a crucial stepping stone for Vietnamese football to build a quality reserve force for the future.
