The most unfortunate team in Asia? Saudi Arabia was bombarded with 22 shots by Spain! They narrowly avoided a 0-6 loss, marking their fifth World Cup collapse.

In a crucial Group H match of the World Cup on June 22, Beijing time, the Saudi men's football team lost 0-4 to Spain. This marked the second big defeat for an Asian team in this World Cup, after Qatar's 0-6 loss to host Canada.

In their first match, Saudi Arabia, despite being underdogs, managed a surprising 1-1 draw with Uruguay. Yet when facing the powerful Spain, they crumbled under the pressure.

Just 10 minutes into the game, Yamal easily broke the deadlock for Spain. Then Oyarzabal scored two goals in the 21st and 24th minutes to complete a brace, quickly putting Spain in full control.

After the halftime break, Spain substituted Yamal, effectively "sounding the retreat." However, in the second half, Cucurella forced an own goal from Tambati in the 49th minute, extending the lead to 4-0.

If it weren't for Ferran Torres missing a clear one-on-one chance and having a goal disallowed in stoppage time, the scoreline could have been a more lopsided 0-6. Ultimately, Saudi Arabia had to accept a 0-4 defeat. Throughout the match, Saudi managed only three shots with one on target, while Spain unleashed 22 shots with eight on target.

Notably, this is not the first time Saudi Arabia has collapsed on the World Cup stage. Although they reached the Round of 16 in 1994 and famously beat Argentina 2-1 in the previous tournament, this West Asian team has more often been known for suffering heavy defeats in the World Cup.

In the 1998 World Cup group stage, they lost 0-4 to host France; in 2002, they were routed 0-8 by Germany; in 2006, they fell 0-4 to Ukraine. In 2018, after a 12-year absence from the World Cup, they opened the tournament with a 0-5 loss to host Russia.

If Japan's recent performances in the World Cup have brought honor to Asian football, Saudi Arabia's record can be seen as a source of embarrassment for the continent.
