Indonesian media: Coach John Herdman sets his sights on winning the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026

Coach John Herdman affirmed that the Indonesian team's short-term goal is to target two key regional competitions: the ASEAN Hyundai Cup and the FIFA ASEAN Cup.

Speaking after his meeting with President Prabowo Subianto in Hambalang on June 19, the English tactician said the ASEAN Hyundai Cup will serve as an opportunity for him to assess the quality of players currently competing in the domestic league.

"We will soon enter the ASEAN Hyundai Cup. This is a great chance for me to test and evaluate local players at the international level," Herdman stated.

However, according to a report from Media Indonesia, Indonesia's approach to the FIFA ASEAN Cup will be completely different.

"The FIFA ASEAN Cup is a tournament we must win to prove we are at the top of Southeast Asia. This is a crucial step we need to take, and we must bring the trophy home," Herdman emphasized.

Beyond regional ambitions, the English manager also touched on the dream of the 2030 World Cup. He revealed that President Prabowo Subianto is among the 280 million Indonesians who hope the national team will participate in the world's biggest football festival.

"He is one of the 280 million people who want us to qualify for the 2030 World Cup. Every day we wake up, we are obsessed with that goal, because if we succeed, it will change everything for this country forever," Herdman shared.

According to Media Indonesia, with backing from the Indonesian government and PSSI under the leadership of Chairman Erick Thohir, John Herdman believes the Indonesian team is on the right track to achieve success at both the Southeast Asian level and on the global stage.

Thus, according to Indonesian media, the goal set by Coach John Herdman is to use the ASEAN Hyundai Cup as a means of testing his squad, while the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is the tournament where Garuda aims for the title to assert their number-one status in Southeast Asia.
