Xuân Son speaks heartfelt words on the day he makes history for the Vietnam national team

As the newly appointed vice-captain of the Vietnam national team, Xuân Son held a press interview recently.

Before the morning training session on June 27 at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center, striker Nguyễn Xuân Son spoke to the media after being trusted with the responsibility of vice-captain of the Vietnam national team during the training camp preparing for the 2026 ASEAN Cup.

Sharing his feelings about being part of the team's leadership for the first time, Nguyễn Xuân Son could not hide his emotion. He said: “When I played for youth teams in Brazil, I once served as captain. But this is the first time I have been trusted to be part of the leadership group of the Vietnam national team. To be honest, I am very happy.”

The striker born in 1997 said he does not feel pressured by his new role, but sees it as a source of pride and motivation to contribute more. “I am used to pressure. Being part of the leadership group of the Vietnam national team is a privilege for me. This is very special. I will try to do my best to help the team,” Xuân Son shared.

Talking about the goals for the 2026 ASEAN Cup, Nguyễn Xuân Son affirmed that team success always comes before personal milestones. He emphasized: “I always want to score goals and aim for the top scorer title. But if I am the top scorer and the team does not win the championship, then it doesn't mean much. The most important thing is still the championship trophy. I want to help the team successfully defend this title.”

After a period of injury treatment, Nguyễn Xuân Son said he is gradually regaining his best form: “I just returned from a serious injury, so I need more time to reach my optimal state. Right now I feel my fitness is very good, and I will try to score goals, provide assists, and fulfill the requirements set by the coaching staff.”

According to the plan, the Vietnam national team will continue training in Hanoi until July 1 before departing for South Korea for a training camp from July 2 to July 14. During the camp, the team will play three friendly matches to assess the squad, evaluate player form, and finalize tactical plans ahead of their journey to defend the ASEAN Cup 2026 title.
